Civ 3 Complete does NOT work on Leopard??

funny i should get a notification that there'd been a reply to this thread today; the release of 10,5,2 decided me to give leopard another go and i just re-installed yesterday [i'd reverted to tiger when i found out what a buggy POS leopard 10,5 was]

10,5,2 is slightly better but unfortch, civ III still refuses to launch. i'd forgotten it was one of the apps i 'lost' when trying leopard last time. if only this thread had been revived a couple of days earlier, i might have thought twice about running leopard up the proverbial flagpole again! :undecide:

Using windowed mode does seem to make the program run, but not without random crashes.

not for me. i've got civ III set to run in windowed mode by default anyway. under leopard it willnae even launch. i get the following error:

civ3leoparderror.gif

not the most informative one i've ever seen!

Do you then get an Apple crash report?

Or do you have a crash report in the /Applications/Utilities/Console/ window under LOG FILES -> ~/Library/Logs -> Crash Reporter -> Civilization 3 Complete ?

Paste the top part of the report here, and let's see if we can guess what's going on? And/or send it to Aspyr for assistance.

well, there's the rub. as [i think] i mentioned previously in this thread, it crashes so quickly it disnae even generate an entry in the crash logs.

I opened a ticked at support.aspyr.com

I got the folowing reply:

Aspyr support said:
<snip> We work rather closely with Apple to resolve any issues we can, but more often than not these issues are caused by Quicktime adjustments or the drivers built into the Mac OS and there really isn't much we can do about it but inform Apple that there is a problem. I can also tell you that the UB for this game was built in the early days of 10.4 and hasn't been thoroughly tested in 10.5. We judge what issues need to be addressed by the amount of support requests we get for them. This is the first support request we have received about this issue with Civilization 3.

I added emphasize to the last 2 sentences. I strongly encourage you to open a ticked yourself and politely state you have a problem getting Civ3 to work in Leopard. And give as much details about what is exactly happing as possible. (but don't try to cheat the system by opening multiple tickets or something. It is highly probable they have ways to discover such frauds, and that won't do our cause much good)

In my experience, they give a reply within 24 hours, on workdays of course, they don't reply at weekends.

well, i've also opened a ticket at aspyr - although the cynical side of me doubts they'll be *that* interested in devoting much time to bug-hunting a non-current product.

I can be even more cynical by saying the realistic side of me agrees. :)

But I'm also an optimist. I do believe that if they think enough people want to play their game on current systems, they will continue their support for this game, at least a little bit. While they may no longer sell lots of units of this product, their continued support for older games does shine upon their future products.
It is worth at least some minimal amount of their resources, depending on how many of their costumers need it.

I registered just to say I have this error too. I'm a first time Mac user and this was one of the two games I bought to play on my Macbook (the other being Diablo 2).

Unfortunately Diablo 2 does not run in OpenGL in Leopard, and Civ 3 Complete does not run at all (I gather it's the same error where it shows up in the Dock for a brief second and then goes away).

Ah well, I guess I didn't buy a Mac for games anyways.

Yeah, Diablo 2 is a sore spot for me too. But at least I can still play it.

Have you tried launching Civ3 and holding the command key? it will show up a dialog with some resolution settings. While full screen mode may not work, I do get the game to run in a window.

well, that was unpredictable!

after opening a ticket at aspyr, telling them that i'd tried reinstalling and deleting all the associated preferences and support files - but that it made no difference, i got a copy&paste email reply telling my to try reinstalling and deleting all the associated preferences and support files

Native? Like.... intel? Well theres your problom! You need to install the universal patch: http://www.macgamefiles.com/detail.php?item=19275

I run Civilization 3 Great, I can play Huge, Micromanaging cities, (But I dont like to...) And no lag, No glitch, But I have noticed it crashing alot since I updated to leopard/intel. Oh well, Auto-Save is a life saver.

NOTE: I could never get the universal patches to work on any game, What I did was, Copy the game from my old/previos harddrive, Instead of installing. And I used the universal patch.

EDIT: Hmm... reading the second page... Maybe i am wrong... :p

Apple has done away with backwards compatibility. We can play Civ3 and 4, but no SMAC or earlier. Anyways, C3C is working fine on my Powerbook 12" with Leopard.

hi,

im trying to run civilization iii (just the regular, no expansions) on my macbook 2.2 ghz intel core 2 duo with leopard 10.5.2, but it says drawsprocket cannot switch to the desired resolution, no matter what i set it at. i tried the new patches, but that didnt help, and im not sure how to de-install them.

what can i do? does anyone know anything about this? any help would be much appreciated.

thank

Hello, welcome :wavey:

As far as I can tell, the old Civ3 software from MacSoft doesn't run in Leopard. I have not tried very hard to solve this problem, as I have Aspyr's Civ3 Complete, which works OK.

So, unless someone else around here has cracked the problem, you may be out of luck.

If that's Civ3 Complete from Aspyr then it ought to run. If it's the old Civ3 from MacSoft then you're probably out of luck.

Civ software does seem to break rather often when it comes up against new Mac graphics cards. Either the Civ software is particularly fragile, or Apple is particularly cavalier about its OpenGL revisions.

I have the old Macsoft Vanilla Civ 3, and it runs very well on my G4 MDD running 10.5.2. One key point is that I did an Archive & Install to go from Tiger to Leopard. There have been numerous reports of the Upgrade causing bizarre errors for many apps. Try doing an A&I and reinstalling.

My guess is that the key point in your message is "G4". The software may well run fine in Leopard on a PowerPC, but not on an Intel CPU.
