Civ 3 is incomplete and a step back in gaming.....

Reynolds didn't do CivII and SMAC all by himself:

As the coding wizard behind all of Brian's smash titles, Jason Coleman brings a wealth of programming experience to Big Huge Games™. The chief architect of the Big Huge game development library, Jason also built the code framework for Civilization II® and Alpha Centauri®.

Tim [Train]'s career in computer games began in 1991 as a team member on the original Civilization®. His impressive list of credits include contributions to Masters of Orion™, Command HQ™, Darklands™, Colonization®, F14 Fleet Defender™, Civilization II®, Magic: The Gathering™, Sid Meier's Gettysburg!™, and dozens of other titles. As producer and co-designer, he organized and directed the development of Alpha Centauri®, PC Gamer's Best Turn-based Strategy Game of 1999. Most recently, he designed and produced Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire™, the award-winning expansion for Alpha Centauri.

These are the three guys who left Sid to form their own company. Good background, eh?

It's no surprise when blokes from Firaxis turn up here (15000 members) or at Poly (19000 members) but I've been lurking around the new RON site and when I see a guy like Tim Train turn up regularly to answer questions on a forum that has all of 91 members, I can't help but thinking: these guys are a class act.

i remember reading an interview with sid meir in which he said he had nothing to do with the making of civ III, apart from playtesting/suggestions. also, if you check the credits of civ III, of the dozens and dozens of people credited, sid meir doesn't get ONE mention.

as for "game-gods" (awful choice of words), sid meir doesn't even touch peter molyneux. if you're talking innovation and originality, there is just no comparison - and i'm not just talking about B&W. IMHO of course ;)

whatever......i just think this game is beyond crap near the modern age

The damn PLAY AREA that you spend 500+ turns PLAYING ON is SO FRIGGIN STATIC that its not even funny. Oh, except for the global warming THAT YOU CAN DO NOTHING ABOUT.

Gimme a god damn break. Im sick of game devs taking big names and putting them on a pile of $hit then selling it.

lets take the MOST BASIC EXAMPLE: Trees and forests grow, do they not? Yes. Now that sounds simple enough. It happens in the real world and they added it in SMAC. Now you would think that something that simple would be in Civ3 but NO, NO it wasnt.

What the hell does happen on the playing field exactly? NOTHING. You have messages popping up all over the place saying: GLOBAL WARMING HAS TURNED PLAINS INTO DESERT............. hmmmm, can anything be done to at least stop this ? hell no, because there is NO interaction between the player and the friggin playing field.

And now people have to pay to play multiplayer, and to play new civs. WHICH I RECALL should have been created by now because this game was supposed to come with a good civ editor. But no, people have to pay for that ****. And for the people that are gonna pay $30 to buy the expansion, i hope they add something damn good for you guys to not feel foolish.

FYI- On a side note : Around 30 years ago , a man went rich from selling ROCKS that came with tags with names on them. He sold them to the genereal public, and now he is living rich. So people are stupid, and they would just about buy anything (civ3) no matter how pointless

Sixchan, great post earlier. SMAC was so much more complex and interesting than civ 3. Civ 3 plays like axis and allies with cities and wonders. I like Civ 3 and love to play, but my addiction to SMAC was much worse. When it is midnight and I am playing Civ 3, I can turn it off and wait to play another day.

With SMAC, it would be midnight and I could not stop playing. Soon it was 3 in the morning and my wife was turning my computer off.

I admit that airpower provided the human player with an unfair advantage in SMAC and civ 3 is hard because of AI cheats.

Simply put, SMAC was funner to play, although it is getting outdated now.

Just told us in the thread.

For me it was Civ2. :D I am glad in a way that the "one more turn" addiction isn't as strong in Civ3. I feel it during daylight but when night comes I too can turn off the game and get a good night's sleep.

although ... im not sure firaxis wanted that palehorse :s

and i loooove and forum where the developers jump in and say hello!!, it makes me feel that they actually want to make me a good game to give them money for (moo3 was/is a good one for that, now to see if they come up with the goods)

hey palehorse ... u ever had the pleasure of playing alpha centuri? i beleive that game is a "fans" game ... complex, detailed but with crappy graphics .... as opposed to a streamlined, simple beautiful game we have here

I have to agree whole-heartedly with Pim and Six.

I loved SMAC. Although I hated when you set up long build queues and it corrupted the game file and it crashed. Couldn't play many a fine game because of that.

I was quite disappointed with Civ3 when i first played it.

Add to the Civ3 rants of you guys is the stupid corruption and war weariness that never goes away... Enough to make the game unplayable on huge maps.

Pim was right on the money with the aspects of SMAC. I mean you got to create drop stealth invaders!!! Talk about kick butt fun!

Out eco-ing the the Gians was my fav strategy... Locust swarms RULE! :alien:
