Starting with the question....

What are the best odds an immortal can have vs. a modern armor?
As I came across this one, I thought about all the various bonuses, etc. The best defensive odds for the immortal are to be found when he is fortified on a mountain in a fortress with barricades; and the MA is crossing a river, but alas, Arathorn specifies Vanilla. So the barricades go the way of Civil Defense...
The question is "best odds"...but it appears we've all been reading "best odds of winning"; which might not really be the question Arathorn asked...which brings us to "the hint"...

But there is another little thing that nearly all combat calculators forget....
What is it that most combat calculators forget? The odds of generating a Great Leader, perhaps?
The best
combat odds for the Immortal (in
Vanilla) call for fortifying in a Metropolis founded on a hill, with a 1 h.p. Modern Armor forced to attack from across a river. The odds of the Immortal winning are 67.2% according to 2 combat calculators I'm playing with. Unless I'm overlooking something, these are the very best
combat odds I can come up with under Vanilla rules.
The best odds for the attacking Immortal are in open terrain, with the MA not fortified. The Immortal has a 64.1% chance of winning.
On to the "Best Odds" and the Great Leader outcome:
Assuming the Heroic Epic has been built, the odds of generating a MGL in the attack are 1 in 12 (8.33%) or 1 in 24 in the defense (4.17%).
So, for our defending Elite Immortal, fortified in a metropolis, with a 1 h.p. Modern Armor attacking from across a river, the odds are:
32.8% - Modern Armor wins
2.8% - Immortal wins, and a Great Leader is born
64.4% - Immortal wins, but no leader
For the Elite Immortal attacking a 1 h.p. Modern Armor in open terrain:
35.9% - Modern Armor Wins
5.3% - Immortal wins, and a Great Leader is born
58.8% - Immortal wins, but no leader.
...as for what I'd do, it'd depend on whether I had a "Killer Spearman" under that Immortal...
