Civ 4 for KICK ASS BUGS

I tell you this has to be one of the most buggy games I have ever had the displeasure of buying. It kicks the pants off of Pool Of Radiance II (which I now consider the second most buggy even though POR was thouroughly unplayable).

What CIV4 puts on my screen is a wonder! I wonder who is responsible for it. The game has horrid memory leaks, after less than a couple minutes, the screen becomes illegible and filled with garbage.

1. Garbled or missing text.
2. Missing GRASS (leaving everything brown).
3. Missing unit icons (except sometimes the shadows and weapons appear).
4. Missing clothes on the leader screen (sometimes only the TEETH appear floating in the air).
5. Garbled effects, missing terrain icons, missing cicles, missing just about everything on occasion.
6. Black text on world view, whole areas that are black when units are in them.
7. strange Icons appearing on the mapview at certain times, especially around the edge.
8. Technology and Build dialog box. Sometimes the icons are there, many times not, sometimes they are just plain wrong.

It's so sad it's almost funny. Perhaps one or two of these effects you can blame on my crappy 4600Ti video card with 128MB ram. Maybe it is my pittable 1GB of memory or my 2800 AMD processor (not overclocked either).

I have been talking to their computerized troubleshooter for almost 2 weeks and my incident has been escalated to 'advance support', I can't WAIT!

Seems like their technical support teams are garbage. I would recommend you to get a new video card with more memory (256 mb would do).

Sorry, but that's not it. With the 1.09 patch and Compaq's latest drivers (72.30 based) for my laptop's video card (GeForce4Go 32mb, aka GeForce4MX) I get absolutely no graphical errors during my gameplay now.

If you use an Nvidia card, I'd suggest either the 71.94 drivers that many people seem to have good luck with for Civ4, or the newest drivers off of Nvidia's web site. Prepatch I had a graphical error that only showed 2 food on ANY tile, but since the patch I've had no problems (since it's only 32mb, I play with the graphics down but have yet now to see any errors at all, runs fairly well too)

If you use an ATI card, ATI's newest 5.11 Catalyst should do fine (although 5.12 should be out any time since it is December). ATI 9500 Pro running Civ4 great in my main system, 1024 with full graphic detail and no errors to speak of.

P.S. This is my first post in this forum but I hope to hang around for quite a while. I am also a self-employed computer technician that's been doing computer work since '92, also been using computers since '87 with Commodore 64. Pleased to make your aquaintance. :goodjob:

I didn't know they had such a thing - those guys must be l33t ;) , but I think there's only two of them in the whole company. All I've got so far is an automated "we'll get back to you" email about 5 days after I emailed them... haven't heard anything since.

I've been waiting on this alleged second-level support since 27 October --the day after I got the game. Far as I can tell, "Second-level support," is Britspeak for "get bent."

Later!

I can't believe I just paid $50 to beta test someone's game. I don't mind lower quality graphics to increase game speed, or the occasional artifact. It happens, it'll be fixed in a patch.

What I do mind is playing for four hours, saving out after having demolished the Persians, and then having the game crash every time I try to load my saved game. That's just WRONG. Some save-games load, some crash.

I can't play like this. I'm uninstalling it and going back to Civ II until they release a patch that actually helps. I read two glowing reviews before I bought it, but I should have come here first.

Civ IV was my reward for winning NaNoWriMo again this year. Bah!! I should have stuck to chocolate truffles.

My only saving grace is I got the game at a bargain price at Fry's for $29.99! I didn't put enough thought into why a new game would be marked 40% off. Shoulda found CIVFANATICS.COM first.

Definately not buying any more 2k games without letting it ferment on the shelf for a year or so.
