Helloo

I've been searching around the forums but can't find anything that gives me a straight answer to what I need to know.

These are my PC specs
Windows XP Pro 2002
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200 + (2.21GHz)
992 MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 6100 nForce 405 (integrated into Motherboard)

Ok then. Heres what I'd like to understand. I'm playing v1.52 of Civ 4 (no Warlords or BTS) and I can get it running smoothly early on. All graphics setting at High, (1152 x 864) resolution, animations and everything else running. It plays really well.

As I progress I have to start lowering the graphics settings to stop the slow loading between turns.

Eventually I end up at (1024 x 768) with graphics at low and animations, effects etc turned off.

Then it gets to a point were simply moving the cursor to the edge of the screen (to scroll the map) crashes the game. The game shuts down and goes to my desktop, but its in a very low resolution and has minimal colours.

I ALWAYS play Marathon custom games with Huge Pangea maps and 17 opponents. Sea Levels are Low and Barbarians are removed. I also use World Builder to create much more land mass and some continents.

I don't really understand the technical aspects of PCs, like RAM and Virtual Memory and things like that. Thats why I'm posting this. :D

So what I'd like to know is, is it the huge amount of land that causes the main performance (and crashing) problems? Is it the the number of opponents? Is it the number of units in play? Is it something else?

Would I get the same problems If I had all the settings as above (Marathon, Huge, Pangea Map, Low Sea Levels) but with 9 opponents? Or would I end up with the same problems but at a later point in the game?

Is there anything I could alter PC-wise to improve things? By that I mean settings, as I can't afford to add anything to the PC.

I've tried to explain things as clearly as I can, so I'm sorry if things are confusing. :)
