Civ 4 messed up MPEG-s, urgent help needed

I installed Civilization 4 and both expansions. The game worked perfectly, but something messed up the way my work program (GTS for subtitling video files) reads .mpg files. The frame recognition doesn't work, the ptogram displays random timecodes. That means I can't work and the deadline is horribly close to start messing with technical problems d: What a bummer!

Everything is ok with other file types though. I uninstalled the game, but the problem is still there. What could Civ do with MPEG-s and how to reverse it?

this is weird in multiple ways - but the most striking is: Civ4 does not uses mpegs in any way so its quite unclear how it could screw with them - did you install anything else recently?

are there any error messages in the windows event manager?
your best bet is likely to (re-)install a program that uses mpegs - since that might correct whatever is wrong in the registry...
