Not really too important, but I think that the soundtrack for Civ could be a lot better than it is. If they really went to town on it, it would really enhance the gameplay experience.

With DVD's being pretty common, they could easily fit countless hours of music with mp3's or whatever format.

One of the things I like about civ is the educational side. Especially given how non intrusive it is. You can easily ignore it, but if you chose to, there's the little button which will give you a short historical description of the civ or tech. And I think they could increase the depth by adding a good music library. Well, multiple libraries, from really early ethnic music, barque, classical, romantic, blues, jazz, rock and roll, country, big band, etc.

I wouldn't have music playing all the time in the game. (you tend to ignore it if it's playing all the time). So maybe sometime it ramdomly plays a track from a relevent library, sometimes it doesn't.

While this is definatly not an important issue, I think touches like this really help to make the difference between a good game and a stunning game. Grand Theft Auto would never have had the same feel without the radio's in the car's.

There'd be a lot of ways the music could tie in with the gameplay too. I wouldn't want to tie different genres to different civ's, but maybe tieing them in with geographical/political situations.

Blues develops if you have a badly treated popluation (ie, black slaves in the real world).

If you're Civ has lots of Cathedrals, then maybe there's a good chance that a mass by Bach or choral music get's played once you complete a new cathedral.

A democratic civ goes to war, lots of WW and you maybe start to hear 60's protest songs.

You have lot's of open farmland, and you hear country music.

Primitive civ has a We Love the King day, and lots of tribal dance music.

You get the idea.

Would have to be carefully done, so that it's not intrusive, and preferably, there's a lot of music, rather than 1 jazz track, 1 mass, 1 african drumming track, etc.

Welcome to CFC Riadsala !

I think the music is quite important. I miss a lot those wonder movies and their music that came up when you built a G.W. in CivII

I think there's a lot of potential for this kind of idea. Worst case, we ought to be able to tie in our mp3 collections of completely legal purchased music that we happened to have copied to our harddrives.

Some friends were telling me about a football game on XBox that lets you assign music to categories. Music for touchdowns, music for victory, etc.

Basic categories could be there. A category for each age, and a category for each situation (prosperity, despair, war).

Just food for thought.

Yeah, I agree. As a worst case, we should at least be able to use are own music.

But hopefully the developers might be nice enough to do it properly and inlude lots of music tied in.

It's not so much a developer thing as a liscence thing. Imagine trying to liscence that much music from all over, you'd need to have a sweet deal with the record companies.

Not to mention that music consumes a LOT of disk space.

Not if the game comes on a dvd (which is getting more common now). Would take no disc space.

Yeah, it would be a liscensing thing. But, as it's used in an educational context (could argue that case), might be possible to get some deals. Also, very little of it would be pop music. And classical music is out of copyright anyway (although not the indivudal recordings).

But, given the game would likely include details about the music, and would be introducing lots of music to new audiances, then would be good advertising.

Dunno how it would work really, but would be cool if it did have in depth music to match the scope of the game.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. 1812 Overture must be included. That and
The Ride of the Valkyries" are the quintessential wartime songs!

What I want a lot is many themes from all tribes of all times. And of course the ones I want most are tunes from the Ancient Times and from other continents (Africa, Asia, Meso-America...). And riadsala's idea to load music corresponding to what happens ingame can be very cool and can have a lot of potential. Think of Age of Mythology's music : when you attack a castle, or when you use a god power, the music suddenly changes and it fits a lot to the game, and it's becoming pretty intense (at least the first times). Though it can't be as impressive in Civ, this would make the game feel more intense, instead of having some boring music when you panzer-attack, etc...

Civ and Age of Empires helped me a lot in quickly learning some stuff about History, and in giving me the will to learn more. Entries to music in the civilopedia would be a good addition, if it doesn't cost other parts of the game to be less worked of course.

I'd have to agree with Trip. While you have DVDs and other proprietary formats on consoles, CD-Roms are still the weapon of choice on PCs. They'd lose a huge market share for pushing it into the DVD realm.

Depends what stage Civ4 is at and when it's due to come out. From what I've seen, nearly all new computer for the past year or so have come with a DVD drive.

Hmm, I'm not sure how true that is. Then again, they are moving to a 3D platform and God knows that might cut a few people off. Maybe they can make bigger assumptions about system standards.

Well, it would cut me out. Partly why I started playing again as modern games don't work on my pc due to aging graphics card. (I mainly use my computer for music production, so it's a good pc, but with little graphics capability).

Almost all. CIV will probably be able to run on systems at least a few years old and I don't even see the need for DVD. It's more expensive and there's no reason for using it. This isn't DOOM IV after all.

It would be great if they had the theme from Panzer-Front, it's brilliant, especially for ww2 era with panzers etc. It's a wonderful piece of music, find it!

I liked the music from Civ2. Especially "Ode to Joy." Why can't they add stuff like that.

Yeah, that's what I'm after. But MORE of it :D So it doesn't become like a jingle that's played when something happens.

Hey, they should bring back the wonders movies. What would be really cool would be for a mini-documentry for each wonder. (no more than a minute or so). Maybe. I dunno.

Personally, i listen to music on a cd player whilst palying Civ, so I don't really see music as an important issue for civ4.

I do to. As the in game music on civ 3 gets pretty repetitive very quickly.

The Civ music is excelent and I don't want it going.
it just fits the game
I don't want to hear Heavymetal as Rome in 3000
