Neither have I....

It's my own witty attempt on Abstract Mathematics vs Concrete Mathematics. And if I have to point out that by Pie I meant you to read it as Pi the joke has failed.

OTOH, not a mathematician, so I'm kinda talking out of my backside here about the concreteness of Pi as a universal law. Could be wrong. Just basing it on my own reading on it and what I can get through popular perception (which is wrong on so very many things, so it could be wrong on this).

Has anyone mentioned yet that when you capture a city full of ships and planes you should clearly get to keep said ships and planes?

And now that your troops don't automatically die when they lose a battle, I hope that allows for POW situations, either turning them into slaves or using them diplomatically.

Sorry if I've repeated someone, I shouldn't be here at all, simply procrastinating away my dissertation time! Back to work...

The ships/planes could easily enough be scuttled/destroyed before being captured. Usually you'd need to board a ship before the crew could scuttle it, or force the ship to surrender. Heck, unless you've got the sea-lanes blocked for that city, the ships could escape. And planes and helicopters could also fly out unless you have total control over the skies.

ah yeh, the scuttled/destroyed point is a good one. I was assuming that they had been left in the city, so it was the civ leader's responsibility to make sure they get their ships out before they're captured. So you would indeed need to completely blockade the city by sea/air to stop them running away.

But the scuttling, that bums me right over. NM then!

still attached to having POWs though

I'd just be happy to have POWs and other such things implementable with mods. It would likely be way too complicated to be in the base game, and no doubt many would absolutely hate whatever the implementation Firaxis used, so just making a basic framework that would allow us to build on would be better all around.

God knows there are any number of things which I wouldn't trust Firaxis to get right that I've seen modders do well in Civ IV.

Quick question, the Steam anouncement says something about acheivements, will this be like MW2 or other x-box games?

Yes, many things would be better as mods than in the game itself.

Sorry didn't mean to double post

One will probably be something like "Survive a battle with less than a 50% chance of success".

One will probably be something like "Discover a technology", "Get to middle ages", and the most epic one, "Build a Unit"...

As in win a game of civ?

@your sig - Is RFC:E out of alpha/beta yet and onto a "final/realease version"?

Yep. Hopefully there'll be some new ways to win, other than just "Kill everyone or go to Alpha Centauri!".

And RFC:E just entered Beta not even a month ago.

Em... how about NOT having to connect to Internet AT ALL! [pissed]

A bit delayed, but there is irony in such a post on an internet forum. :p

Anyway after reading all the fan dumb in the thread here I finally made up my mind and pre-ordered Civ5 vanilla on Steam. After reading the features list I think it'll be worth it. :D

Posting on the internet to exchange ideas between people with similar interests, it's optional.

Having the internet to play Civ5... not so optional.

See the difference?

Riiight... So because I use Internet I should be perfectly happy for a game to require Internet connection even if I, lets say use Internet at friends place or... library and don't have it at home?

I think kochmans answer should be enough...

@SickFak: Do you have internet at home? If so, what exactly is your gripe? You only need the internet to activate the game, after that you can play in Offline mode to your heart's content.

@Kochman: If you want to drive a car a Ferrrari, you have to buy gas, and insurance, and have a driver's license. Or you can take the bus. If you want to play Civ V, you will need a one-time internet connection, or you can play a different game.

You know, in order to play Civ V, you will also need Windows and a working computer, too. Just sayin'.

Poor analogy - a much better one would be.

If you want to drive a Ferrari you have to turn on a special 'device'(that has no real function in relation to the act of actually driving a Ferrari) and feed it personal information to be able to even enter your Ferrari the first time and everytime you want to enter your Ferrari after that you still have to turn on that special 'device '(even if you just want sit in your Ferrari in the privacy of your own garage) ... or at least you would have to do all this, if Ferrari also sold their cars making use of the same rules as those that applies to buying and using ciV.
