I've been hearing a lot of hype lately about the possibility of Civ 5 being in the works, and multiple sources have confirmed it on their websites. For example, Gamespot now has its own page for Civ 5. As you can imagine, this caused normally well mannered and intelligent people to become giddy like frantic japanese school girls. Look at this board itself, it's filled with posts talking about what they think ought to be included in the next installment of civ. They go on for pages, and pages, and pages.

Before I go on and continue to rant, I admit I could be wrong about what I am about to say and some of it is just my natural opinion. I would urge people to correct my facts if they are wrong, but don't bother with my opinions (and don't be lame and miscontrue my opinions as facts... you're not that stupid I'd hope)!

First I have to say that I've been an aficionado for well over a decade, having enjoyed Civ since its first installment it wouldn't be a lie to say I was raised by the mind of Sid Meier! Through II, the dark periods of CtP, III, and IV the games went through their phases. Sometimes certain features improved, sometimes features got worse or were ignored; by and large though, the franchise continued to improve in my eyes. The games have always been entertaining and challenging to large audiences in my eyes.

That all changed with Civ Rev. They took everything people liked about the game and watered it down for a console. I won't go on to list why I dislike Civ Rev so much. I accept certain facts about why the game was developed and move on. It reached a wider audience, was easy to play on consoles, appealed to all age groups. But in my eyes, the game just barely fit the bill for what long time veterans would classify as a civ game. But like I said, I won't go into it... it's been widely discussed before.

So, I've been hoping to God for a Civ 5. A true Civ 5. And I was literally heartbroken to discover that Civ Network will be the next incarnation of the franchise. In my eyes, it further waters down the concepts and challenges that made the Civ series so enjoyable. Basically as a giant facebook app, it's going quite literally into the realm of mmo.... to compete with "animal farm" and "my restaurant". I find that insulting on many levels. The venerable, widely respected, complex and challenging franchise of Civ will now be on a comparable level with animal farm... a game elementary aged children (and oddly, asian women everywhere) enjoy.

I speak for many others when I say that I was hoping that the successor to Civ IV would continue in its foot-steps and continue to evolve. We don't want simpler games, easier games. Where is the challenge? What happened to the evenings we'd stay up well past midnight trying to orchestrate the downfall of our adversaries? Instead we play half-hour games that all seem so cookie-cutter (civ rev). Sure Civ Net will definitely be different, but I have a feeling it too will be just as simple and the key to success will probably rely on how many friends you can weasle into playing the game. And if its mmo, it never truly ends. Games like those always destroy themselves as the most established players eventually kick the :):):):) out of anyone until people don't even want to play anymore!

And I know some of you are saying "Shut up, Bradicus! Whats wrong with a Civ IV expansion?"

Everquest.

You really want to go down that road? Another expansion would be easy for us established players, sure no doubt about it. But its just another expansion to buy for new players.... most of whom wouldn't buy it now. It's just a stigma people have. It's nearly 2010. No new gamer is going to buy a game as old as Civ IV even if it has 3 or 4 expansions. It isn't healthy for the franchise to continue with expansions anymore.

Civ IV was launched 5 years ago and the last expansion was 3 years ago, and it's given us a lot of good times. But the Series needs a new PC turn-based successor, a true Civ game. Civ Net will simply not fulfill the needs of true Civ players, or at least not for long.

I also have no interest in Civ Facebook App, and I sincerely hope that doesn't replace a true Civ sequel. I'm a little frustrated that no mention of a true Civ 5 has been announced, the serires seems to have fallen off the face of the earth for it's creators.

I agree 100% with everything you say. Allthough in my eyes I don't think Civ4 was as good as Civ3. It was made more tactical. I think they should move back to more strategic stuff like civ3 and keep civ4 features and get new ones.

I endorse this post. Or at least, I would if I thought it were accurate. But I disagree that the facebook Civ is intended as Civ V. The developers aren't so stupid as to not create a game already in high demand by a large audience. In my eyes, Civ Network is merely a way of increasing the Civ customer base before the next incarnation of the game is released. So I doubt that the next Civ will be of a lower quality, just because it's feeder games are.

Couldn't have said it any better

Colonization was basically an expansion on Civ IV, and I'm speculating that there may be good reasons to make more expansions based on Civ IV. Mainly, what if license for the Engine extends to expansions as long as they are called "Civ IV_____" ? In that case it could be milked for a long time to make games in a variety of different niches. Payoff for making it so moddable.

I truly and wholeheartedly hope you prove me wrong, I honestly do. I really don't think anything is in the works though, there hasn't even been a fart in the wind about firaxis looking at making a Civ V.

The next game will likely require an entirely new engine to compete with (or set the bar for) the new generation of games. Civ III and IV engines, while good for their times, and while not lacking too greatly, are just adequate by todays standards and really not impressive in the realm of AI. That being said, and hopefully considered, the development of a new game would be a massive undertaking. That would depart greatly from the direction Firaxis has been unfortunately taking, whereby they :):):):) out a game milking the same engine they've used for more than half a decade.

Maybe I'm just jaded because I would have hoped that Firaxis wouldn't sell out so easily and make such simplistic and cheap games (Civ Rev, Pirates, Railroads, etc). I know they are a company with shareholders and a drive for profit is an absolute priority, I just would have thought some effort should have been given to appeasing a very loyal fanbase.

Like I said in my original post, expansions would only be purchased by those likely still playing Civ IV today. Sure there would be marginal outside enthusiasm. But remember the Stigma about heavily expanded games, they eventually isolate themselves in their complexity or number. Thats why nobody buys Everquest II anymore or hell even World of Warcraft is leveling off (or declining depending on who you talk to). In fact I am hard pressed to name any game that has been able to churn out expansions that increase it's fanbase over time after the second or third expansion. Also, the engine itself is versatile yet stale in comparison to others out there. It's like a tv show you really don't want to end, but it has to. Civ IV and anything related to it, has to eventually fade out to be replaced by the next generation.

Colonization is actually its own separate game that uses the same engine as civ 4; other than that, all ties are for marketing purposes only. Railroads also uses the civ 4 engine. The engine itself handles graphics and some very low level stuff, so unless AI changes radically in the next few years (doubtful, unless you want civ 5 to require a quantum computer) it could be enhanced on the existing engine. I favor keeping the engine if at all possible so that modding will be as powerful as it is now.

Except the ever so stupid AI the Civ Package was quite perfect. That's why I think it's very hard to come up with a decent sequel so soon. Unfortunately decent AI is too hard to develop :(

My view of the future is that Civ5 will come out, and many people won't like it. They will continue playing their old games (civ4, Civ3, and even Civs1&2), and complain about the new one. Kinda like I do with civ4...

To me mod'ability only goes so far. The AI is horrendously stupid. Its a joke! Unfortunately, as Agramon has said, it is very difficult to develop a new AI. That's the principle reason why I don't see a Civ5 anywhere close to being on the horizon. I don't mean to crap on the engine too much, the best content available in my eyes has been mods created by fans such as us. Also keep in mind that a new engine doesn't necessitate the inability to mod it. Civ III had some great mods and scenarios created by fans. Civ IV coming out didnt ruin that. Hell even Civ II had some pretty kick @$$ stuff! The only downside to a new engine is the learning curve required to master the new system for the existing modders.

doubtful, unless you want civ 5 to require a quantum computer

Civ IV isn't exactly a system hog... for crying out loud I play it on my 5 year old laptop! A new engine doesn't HAVE to be a system hog. It would be nice for it to push new boundaries but, with the advances in computer technology since 2004, I hardly think that if there is a Civ 5 that a new engine will be so advanced that everyone will have to go out and get new gear. This isn't an FPS or anything!

Ignoring the technobabbling above, I have to agree with most of what's been said. There are games and then there are games. Call me the gaming equivalent of an old coot, but there's a certain general model by which a Civ game can be identified. Frankly, if the new game is not identifiably similar (better, but similar) than the past numbered iterations, I'll just go back to playing SMAC (my system's slowly dying on me, so I've been doing that anyways, but you get the drift).

You really want a list of all the things that are dreastically wrong with Civ IV that need fixing stat ?

The reason a new AI would require a quantum computer is because there is only so much you can program on a classical computer. While quantum computers are most famous for being faster, that is not the only benefit. There are some methods of programming that simply cannot be done on current computers. It is suggested that consciousness is linked to quantum mechanics, which if true, means that you need quantum processes for intelligence.

Other than that, there is no reason why a better AI would need a new engine. The AI code is in CvGameCore.dll (the SDK). The engine is just graphics.

someone needs to get laid. =P

ANYWAY....

I don't think there is a complete solution to the AI, you're just going to have to deal with it.

And giving players any kind of advantage to 'balance' the AI is just stupid and unrealistic, so forget it.
