Civ 5 Playthru -How to Conquer the World by being Poor, Upset and Massively Outgunned

what are you talking about aussie, it comes out tomorrow! I'll be heading down to EB in rundle mall to pick up my pre-order :D

Tomorrow you say? Well color me happy, I think I'll be heading down to EB Games on Saturday then (I'd go in Friday, but I won't get time to play before Saturday anyway ;) ).

Aussie.

Sorry Bismark!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Sneaky she-devil got herself a cultural victory. Kind of justifies why she stopped with the whole warring. I should have paid attention to the victory screen. totally forgot about cultural victories. figured she was too big. But, of course for the size of her empire she probably still only had three or four non-puppet cities.

Sorry I couldn't give you all an apocalyptic total war ending with a Chinese invasion. Seems that wasn't her plan, and it seemed to work out well for her.

Will post more thoughts after my first complete game! Expect them soon, or later. Probably soon.

Thanks everyone for keeping tabs on my game. Was great to be able to share my first Civ 5 experience with the rest of you.

Laters! :)

thanks for posting this lemmy. it certainly takes the sting out of not being able to buy the game just yet and has solidified my resolve to make that happen even faster now.

concurrent to this delightful thread:

In the five or six games I have attempted since release I have noted two things that are also evident here:

1. Wu Zetian is extremely powerful and aggressive, I think it has something to do with the massive boost from the Paper Factory.
2. The AI cannot mount a sea invasion to save it's life, whatever the form.

I had a game as Tokugawa (Nobunaga) end poorly, and just for sport I sat on a small continent with two fairly well developed cities just to see how long or how the AI would handle having to float half-way around the world to finish me off. I covered the edges of the small landmass with Crossbowmen and Cannons and waited.

They sent ships alone or in pairs, which I blew up alone or in pairs for about 50 turns until I got bored and left. The game was only set to Warlord, but I have had Warlord-difficulty attacks mounted by superior powers using layered assaults backed up by ranged and artillery with cavalry flanking... Warlord AI can clearly handle a regular ground fight.

Fun thread, Lemmy!

Not true about the AI not able to mount naval invasions. In my Archapelago map style on Prince difficulty at around 1200 AD, Bismark and I mounted an alliance against Washington. Even though they were technically on the same continent, he sent half of his forces around one way towards Washington via land, and the other half around back for a sneak attack via embarking. Complete with tiremes offering bombarding support. On PRINCE difficulty. I am sure that the AI tactics also improve on the higher levels.

That was splendid. I enjoyed reading this a lot as well as your optimism about the game. The end was a little anticlimactic but w/e

Yup I thought the same thing. The nature of the beast I guess, the AI was out to win and she won so fair play to her. She didn't have entertaining Civ Fanatics on her agenda like myself. :D

Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you liked!

lemmy, this thread has helped me survive the painful waiting. Still has 17 hours before steam let me play. Can we expect another of these playthroughs? I would love one.

I am not in the habit of posting, but like many of the other correspondents here, I thoroughly enjoyed this splendid effort.

I am in Hong Kong and patiently await 8am tomorrow morning which is 12GMT when Steam will unlock the game.

This thread and the demo have really wetted my appetite.

Thanks for the effort Lemmy.:)

De-lurking just to say that this is one of the most entertaining threads I've ever read on this site. Your forum avatar fits nicely with the narrative style, I imagine Wu's facial expression when deigning to speak to the mostly-asleep cigarette-dangling Babylonian guy. :D

Good show my man, your writes are very entertaining.

I noticed in a recent screenie you had like, 2k+ gold. I wonder if you could have used that to bribe some city states into voting for you on that diplo election...?
