I made a design for a Kuru civ a few months back. I'm going to post it here!



Be the first to religion, build a shrine, use the Purohita and gain a boost to your faith in that race for religion.

Is the Purohita the same as the Vedic Priest you reference in the UB?

I finally have a design...

Kuru Kingdom(Janamejaya)

UA: Vedic Traditions
Religious buildings grant a great work of music* slot and a musician specilaist upon completion. great works of music and writing contribute points towards a Purohita, and provide faith per each city following your religion whenever a Purohita is born. +1 faith from musician and writer specialists.

UU: Purohita
Replaces great prophet. May not spread religion. However, when adjacent to a city, causes all specialists and great works in it contribute religious pressure for your religion. When stationed in a city, increases its faith output by 20% per each great work in the city.

UU: Sacred fire
Replaces shrine. Contains an additional great work of music slot. +1 faith from all resources that provide at least 1 food.

*all slots earned that way will be placed in a separate builidng. If great works from the same era and civilizations are placed in it, it will provide a themeing bonus.

Start Bias: Grassland
Capital: Asandivat
UA: Srauta
Great Tile Improvements within range of the Capital yield Faith equal to their primary yield. Upon founding a Pantheon, River tiles adjacent to your Cities generate +1 Faith.
UU: Shaunak (replaces Great Prophet)
Upon the expenditure of a Shaunak, the closest Kuru City generates +2 Culture and +2 Tourism. 20% of your Culture output per turn is added to the points needed to generate a Shaunak after the first one is generated.
UB: Shakha (replaces University)
Standard University benefits. In addition, Holy Sites within range of the City in which it is built generate +2 additional Faith and +2 Culture.

Isn't that a little over powered? Maybe switch it to every other work of music. I could be wrong. I like the idea though, very unique.

Yeah after looking at it again it is kind of OP. I nerfed it to one writing for every two music now.

I disapprove of giving a Hindu civ a Guru UU. I'm a bit of a Sikhophile, I think they deserve that, if anyone.

I agree with McGann, the UA is a tad too powerful. I do, however, really like it! Very synergistic, flavourful, and incredibly unique.

I understand your qualm with the guru and I agree that it would be very appropriate for a Sikh civ. However, Hinduism has existed for over a thousand years longer than Sikhism and so Hindu Gurus have been around just as long. The Gurus also fit perfectly with the theme of recording oral tradition because their job is transmitting oral tradition. There's also the fact that there is no Sikh civ nor do I have any design for them. To me, that means I can use something that might be more appropriate for another civ for this one. This is the case with England getting Longbows which I think is better for Wales and Denmark getting Norwegian ski infantry which is obviously better for Norway. Either way, I still think that the Guru is very appropriate and synergistic with the rest of the design.

UA: Ashvamedha
You may sacrifice any animal resources for faith (the resource in your resource list not the one on the map) except cattle which provide +1 faith.

UU: Kshatriya (horseman replacement)
Provides faith from kills (this stays on upgrade) is stronger and doesn't require horses.

UB: Shakha (library replacement)
+2 faith, provides a free missionary when you found a religion.

Why do horses give less faith? The horse sacrifice was a pretty well known ritual done by the kings and the UU doesn't use horses so there's no reason to keep them around.

Mostly for balance but also for a variety of other reasons which don't make as much sense to me as they used to so I will edit my original post.

UA: The Saga of the Mahabharata: All cities have a Great Work of Writing slot that when filled makes Jungle and Forest tiles worked by the City produce +1 Faith. For every +10 Faith produced in all cities, gain +1 Great Writer points in the Capital.

UU: Sakhin: Missionary replacement. If garrisoned in a city, recieve Faith equal to 25% the City's culture output from Great Works and Theming Bonuses.

UB: Shakha: Temple replacement. +1 Faith from Horses, Sheep and Cattle. City gains +1 Faith and +1 Culture from each Great Work of Writing in the city.

Pretty satisfied with it. Not exactly sure if it might be OP.

UA: Compilation of the Vedas
Upon adopting a social policy before the renaissance era, receive faith for every Great Work of writing and animal resource in the Capital. Upon constructing a religious building or improving an animal resource anywhere in the empire, receive Great Writer points in all cities with a Great Work of Writing.

UB: Shakha (Replaces Temple)
The Shakha, unlike the temple it replaces, has a slot for a Great Work of writing, which, when filled, converts 10% of this city's faith output into Great Writer points. Additionally, the first Shakha to be built comes with a free, unique Great Work of Writing - 'the Mahabharata' which yields an additional +2 culture and faith.

UB: Dasi (Replaces Warrior)
The Dasi is slightly weaker than the Warrior it replaces, at only 6 combat strength, but may move through forest and jungle tiles without incurring a terrain penalty. Additionally, the Dasi may improve animal resources, granting a burst of culture and faith when completed.

This was a particularly tough one to do but I'm pretty pleased with the result. The synergy here is pretty obvious and hinges around maximising your bonuses from Great Works of Writing, a fitting concept for the civ which compiled some of the most important texts in South Asian history. The UA enables you to use all the culture from your Great Works to boost your faith generation, while simultaneously using your faith buildings to boost your generation of Great Works. This works particularly well once you hit the Shakha, which convert all that faith into yet more Great Works, making culture victory a breeze as long as you focus on the religious game! The Dasi is simple but helps you with the UA by making animal resources a bit easier to improve and nudging you towards some easy social policies in the early game. Ideally I'd pair this design with a decision which allows you to purchase religious/cultural buildings with faith in cities with a GWoW - that'd complete the synergy for me, but alas, I'm happy with the existing synergy anyway.
