Civ Discussion - Qajar

>I played a genuine one city challenge (no towns)

I love a good OCC! I like to see how creative people can get to make it work. I always thought Qajar would be perfect for an OCC, so glad to see it is doable with them.

I know Han and Abbasid are great for OCC, but is it possible to do it with other civs? Like Mongolia gets extra settlement capacity. Use your first two civs to get max settlement capacity, and then get an absolute bonkers crazy Qajar in the final age. Could that be done?
Well Mementos, like Civs, are age limited so

Corona Civica + Rome/Persia/Carthage + CS Settlement Limit
can get you 10-11 in Antiquity

Then Corona+Mongol +CS Settlement Limit can add 13-14 more in Exploration

So you could start Modern with 23-25 …more with the military/expansionist attributes (and standard+CS boost it to 29-32)

If you use Civica again it gets you 3 more, using Xerxes Kok gets you 6 more
the attributes get you 2-6 more (depending on how early you get them)

Qajar Civics:
Nezam-e Jadid - unlocks the Qullaraqasi tradition and gives +1 CS to land units for every 2 settlements owned below the settlement limit

Does it has the same meanings as Turkish 'Nizam i Cedit'?

and Gholam is actually a really anachronistic 'Cataphract' I think. by the time of Qajar. I don't know if anyone still uses the term 'cataphract' to call their heavy cavalry. though Zamburaks should be UU instead.

Just finished my latest game where I finally gave Qajar a go and I think they're pretty good, at least if you plan a little ahead. My game ended up going Aksum>Chola>Qajar... it became pretty apparent early on in Exploration that I wasn't going to have good luck with Treasure Resources (I had one pretty good spot with 3 treasure resources not all that far off the coast, but that was it) so I basically decided I'd mostly stick to backfilling my own continent with a few island towns here or there. I knew I wouldn't be pushing up against the settlement cap by the end of the age so I was already thinking this might be a good time to try Qajar, and I basically just stopped settling for the rest of the game once I hit 12 settlements. This meant that at the start of the Modern Age I was 4 settlements under the limit, which provided a nice bonus early on (+40 science and culture on the capital as soon as I researched their first civic) to start the age.

Since I knew I was done expanding and was going to build my strategy around maximizing this bonus I put a focus on grabbing any +1 settlement bonuses I could go... I managed to get one from a military city state and 1 at the end of the expansionist tree, while also putting an emphasis on them in my research and civic choices as well. By the end of the game I believe I was at 12/24 settlements, so I was getting +120 science, culture, food, and production in the capital. I found the bonus science and culture to be less impactful as the game progressed and I boosted my numbers through other means but even finishing the game around 1000/turn in each that still meant one card was responsible for over 10% of each yield - pretty nice IMO.

I also found that Qajar produces quite a bit of influence. My modern age had a bunch of diplomatic city states spawn, and I befriended 3 of them and took the bonuses to diplomatic actions and espionage. The diplomatic action discount meant I could basically support anything the AI offered me, and what do you know - Qajar gets bonus culture every time that happens! The espionage discounts paired with my leader choice (Harriet Tubman) meant I could take all of that extra influence I was saving and spend it on annoying my opponents, which was also a lot of fun.

Can't really comment on the combat bonuses since I don't ever really play aggressively, but +2 CS on all my units at the beginning of the age increasing to +6 by the end, paired with their strong unique cavalry and fast commanders seems like they'd hold up pretty well if it came down to it.

I'm glad they're in the game! I don't know if they're the strongest by any stretch (and I know to some that is all that matters) but they strike me as very competitive and flexible and they'll be a great option to have in any game you find yourself not expanding all that quickly. Obviously they're not going to fit everyone's playstyle but personally I like them a lot and I see myself coming back to them often in the future.

Decided to try my first OCC with Qajar this weekend. My first attempt was Khmer/Abbasid/Qajar and I tried but failed to get an econ victory because I just didn't have access to enough resources. Dropped down to Sovereign today and finally got it with Greece/Abbasid/Qajar and got a close science victory. I had to spend the whole game fending off denunciations from four different leaders, but managed to stay out of conflict. Whew.

I have a lot to learn about OCC strategy because there's no way I could do this without Qajar. But it was definitely a fun, quicker, and different way to play.

I tried the same a little while ago (on Deity), but with Xerxes and Rome -> Mongolia -> Qajar. With this setup I got a settlement limit of 29 in Modern, which yielded some incredible bonuses from the Qajar traditions!
I opted for the Scientific Victory, but lost the game on Turn 106, just as I was starting to research Rocketry (and needed 16 more turns to complete it). With a production of over 400 in the Capital, I completed the projects in just a couple of turns, but my Science output of 739 didn't stack up to Catherine's 3068.

Like you, I guess I have a lot to learn about OCC strategy, but I don't think I'll try this again, as I found it quite boring, especially Exploration was a real drag.

I don't think it's worth giving up virtually all your exploration era bonuses just for a little extra settlement limit later. I would much rather try for, say, the Pirates, where you can use the exploration era to plunder treasures. Dunno if they would get enough science, but maybe you get enough from being a nuisance to everyone else that you can hold off the AI.

Good point! However unfortunately there were no Pirates in the game yet when I did this challenge...
