Civ DLC's

I don't mind DLC as a concept. The ones I got for Mass Effect 2 were money well spent, not highly priced and added real content to the game.

I haven't bought any of the Civ DLC though, save Mongolia (free!) and Babylon (wanted the soundtrack, money well spent I think). I just think $5 is asking to much since I never to scenarios and just want the extra Civs. I've convinced myself there'll be a steam sale at some point.

If the price would drop to around ~$2 I'd go for it. Simple economics. I'm not mad at Firaxes, I'm just not giving them my money till they cut the price.

I buy them all and will continue to buy them all because I get more than $5.00 enjoyment out of new Civ's.

What he said ^^^^

I always look forward to new civs, adds new textures to games. :goodjob:

I have bought all the DLC's with new civilizations and wonders, ie Babylon, Mongolia, the New World,Polynesia, Denmark and the Korea and Ancient Wonders pack. I'm in the process of getting the Cradle of Civilization maps pack.

I mostly pick up the civs because I'm very interested in mechanics of each unique trait and how the civs play. I also use the information to edit and update my GoogleCiv project.

the New World, Polynesia, Korea and the Ancient Wonders are the most interesting to me, especially the Ancient Wonders scenario. I'm not militarily inclined, so the Mongolia and Viking scenarios are pretty difficult to me; I guess I need more practise. What Babylon lacks in content, it made up for in the civlization's trait, it was terribly overpowering before their reduced the Great Scientist rate.

I rank the DLC's thusly;
Ancient Wonders :goodjob:
Polynesia
the New World
Babylon
Korea
Mongolia
Denmark

I bought all the Civ DLCs and will continue to buy them. To a good degree, people are right that the pricing is a rip off. I will buy them anyway. I am a Civ Fanatic. I understand other Civ Fanatics making different purchase decisions. I do not understand any of them thinking anything ill of me for my reaction to my addiction. Think as ill of Firaxis as you like, but give your kindred addicts a break.

Seriously, I am just waiting for the next DLC to come out; it's that bad.

As another said, these DLC's seem expensive but are cheaper than a fancy cup of coffee or a ticket to a movie. Eating out invariably costs more, just about the only thing I can do with 5$ is buy one drink or some cheese and bread. And since these DLCs come out less often than monthly it's not really that much.

It only seems expensive because we're used to being spoiled by really nice expansion packs like BTS that had everything. More expensive than we're used to yes, but really not that much.

I've bought all the DLCs. The $5 here and there means nothing to me. After some of the patches the game is actually really good, and I spend a lot of time with it, and every civ/wonder DLC makes the game more interesting. I've also had fun with the scenarios, but I mostly buy the DLC to improve the core of the game.
However, when that's been said, I think the game needs more depth, and I'd love an expansion pack or more rule-changing DLC. I loved how in Civ 4 you could focus on culture, and actually take over some of the tiles (even cities) of your enemy if you outproduced him. Also, I miss things like religion, etc. - I really hope the GOTY edition doesn't mean that they'll stop producing DLC. And since we haven't heard anything _at all_ about an expansion pack, I fear that it's not even being worked on :(

The occasional outlay of $5 or £3.99 isn't really a problem of course, but i do feel slightly ashamed when i fall for it. For two reasons really.

1. The core game isn't up to scratch. CivV desperately needs a proper expansion with new features and an improved AI. Adding more maps, scenarios and Civs via DLC is welcoming, but does not resolve the prime problem.

2. The sneaky business case. Release a game, with limited and dull Civs. Then drip-feed a bunch of new, overpowered Civs, at a price that ppl can say is "only the price of a coffee".

Well civ-wise Civ 5 wasn't that limited. There were 18 civs in vanilla and they were quite varied as well.

But you're right in a way, most DLC-civs have something interesting, although it is tradition since Civ3 to bring in interesting civs later in an expansion/DLC.

I bought the Civs and Wonders DLC but not the maps.

If the DLCs are replacing Expansion packs then the current DLCs cost about the same as an expansion pack. However, in an expansion pack you get extra research etc so the price of the DLCs is a expensive which is probably one of the main reasons they went with Steam, more cash. I tend to flog Civ so get my moneys worth in the end. The thing I like about DLC is it adds a fresh boost to Civ just as I am starting to get bored.

I like the DLC civs except for the Koreans. I found the civ pretty lame and the turtle ships don't cut it as a replacement for Caravels. Love the Denmark Civ. The Wonders pack is very good and I would like to see more 'other' DLCs. Still hoping for a Celts DLC.

I thought the Koreans were pretty awesome. Sure, they didn't get proper caravel analogues, but the Hwacha is absolutely amazing against infantry, and that science bonus they get from even unworked citizens makes up for it.

In a perfect world I'd like some of both - an expansion with paid civilizations on the way. I have no problem paying for quality content - I agree with the price point to some extent (always could be lower), it's certainly a better deal than a sandwich or a movie.

Here's hoping for some fun scenarios and mechanics in an expansion!

I think it probably comes down to individual preference and the way you like to play the game. I'll give Korea another a crack next game.

I never really understand why people claim $5 is that much money for DLC. $5 in this world, in most places, really isn't that much money. Maybe those on here are just really tight on their budgets, I don't know. But there are so many things that give so much less enjoyment or less usage time per dollar then DLC it's laughable to complain about.

In all honesty, a lot of us probably end up saving more then $5 in the time spent playing the DLC. Maybe that makes us skip going to the movies once. Maybe we don't go out driving somewhere, save 2 gallons of gas and you've saved more then $5.

It's too much because the game, with 18 civs and LOTS more, cost only $50. If you do the easy math the value of each civ (assuming that civ v came with nothing more than civilizations) would be $2.77. We know that the game came with much more, therefore they should actually be less than that. Yet they are being sold for $5 and that is ridiculous.
