CIV FOR DUMMIES - my newbie game on Chieftain difficulty

Hello all,

I've seen a lot of games being played on monarch, emperor and deity difficulty levels, but to be honest I find it difficult sometimes to learn how to play the game well while on these difficulties mainly because I haven't learned how to play the game successfully even on Noble. I read strategy guides from other players but they are always too advanced for me and never detailed enough to give me a strong insight into what the players are doing.

I am thinking about starting a new series called Civ For Dummies, to help me and anyone else too embarrassed to ask for help beating low difficulties. I've played enough times that I feel pretty comfortable beating any Chieftain game, and probably any Warlord game. I might even get lucky with Noble games but I'm god awful at Civ apparently, and I have trouble with those sometimes.

Before making massive posts, I wanted to ask the people here on the forum if this kind of thing would be beneficial or even wanted. My agenda is as follows:

- Try for all the different victory types at one time or another
- Start with the easiest difficulties and ramp up
- Explain everything I'm doing in great detail, possibly even a turn by turn analysis for the parts where people can learn a lot
- Help other newbies like myself who may be lurking and too embarrassed to talk about these lowest difficulty levels
- Assume ZERO knowledge ahead of time, other than a basic gaming instinct (heh)

Also, I plan to use these settings:

Map Type: Pangaea
Climate: Temperate
Sea Level: Medium
World Size: Small
Shoreline: Random
Civilization: Random
Difficulty: Chieftain
Game Speed: Normal

So with that, I open myself to the wolves of Teh Interwebz. Web wolves, be merciful with your cyber-teeth to this lowly n00b of n00bs. :)

EDIT: Here is the thread link, posted in this since it's the first post. That way you don't have to scroll down to find it. The thread was recently moved to the strategies section. Link: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=314428

Well, if only there was one of these when I first had the game. I always did wonder why it took 1000 years to train 1 worker...

I am a super noob when it comes to Civ, I'd love to have something like this to help me. Mostly because I'm tired of my war mongering friends belittling my pacifistic world-wonder factory of a civilization.

I would like to say here that a small map -while fast- will prolly not let the game continue as far as modern age. With Pangea map also people will not cover naval aspects of the game and colonization of the new world.
Also, the random leader is not a good choice for people to learn. Every strategy, every way to win favors some leaders over the others. Same goes with maps and all parameters.
I would suggest a Warlord level Terra map, all on Normal parameters while picking a diffrent leader every time to show a diffrent strategy/ way to win!
Other than that, great initiative. Two thumbs up!

i say its the greatest plan of all time and do it

except the post above suggested small map - better for a posting but less of a game? ....

i suggest the game has three options with scales within each

attack, build, or both

the romantic, the classic, and the social

jung, freud, adler

platoon, apocolypse now, full metal jacket etc

The reason I chose small map and normal speed is specifically for a much shorter game because I want to go in a lot more detail than the other games so fewer turns is better for me at this point.

I'm still torn on having a Random leader. I think I'd like to show how to conquer another civ in this game (I feel confident I can do it in Chieftain) so maybe picking a warmongering race would be better. But it's definitely possible with even non-warmongering traits. Anyone have suggestions as to what leader they would like to see played?

Well it looks like there's interest in this so maybe tonight or tomorrow night I can get the first round started and show people the starting position.

I'm sure some people will find it useful and you should go ahead and do it.

I agree with ASF about the map. Would a standard size map using a continents type map script like Hemispheres be better? It would allow you to have intercontinental diplomacy/trade routes in your games. Or invasion of another continent if you (or the AI) decide to go for it :)

I don't see any problem with using random leaders though. One of the things you want to come out of your games is 'play the map, not the civ/leader'. You certainly don't want to pick a leader, and a strategy based on their traits, before seeing the map. So using a random leader would be just fine.

(edit) fair enough do a small pangea then

I want to keep it as simple and easy as possible for this first game. I want to have all the victory options easy and available to me - navy gets complex for me so if I want conquest or domination I'd like to have everyone on my continent LOL! :) I'd rather have all the AIs right there and available from the start so there aren't any hidden surprises. I know that's lame, but it's part of the reason this series is geared to newbies - I am a newbie myself!! Haha...

I think that's a great idea.

These things are a lot of work, if you are willing to put in the time, taking screenshots and doing the write ups I think there are a lot of players out there who could learn.

I'll happily play along and throw in some input as a Noble/Prince player. Sometimes the advice and MicroManagement (TMiT excluded ;)) of the higher level players, whilst excellent can confuse and discourage the lower level players.

I look forward to the save file for game 1 of many. :)

Good idea Yorgi,
I love playing Civ and play relatively well using instincts and avoidance of micromanagement. A Civ-For-Dummies showing the simple path to fun is a great plan. Do use the 'KISS' principle. I will try to follow your thread and be helpful if I can. :goodjob:

I think it's a great idea! I play most of my games on Noble (I know, I know, I'm just amazing...), but I'm sure I could still learn tricks from your writeup! :)

I agree with renegadechicken- i play on noble but i'm sure i can learn a new trick or two.

You can always play more games after this. Hopefully you'll pick up some playing partners and you can collectively explore other settings/ maps/ etc. together. Maybe another player has picked up on something you find challenging. He'll teach you and vice versa.

Good points by the other Noble players. I know I play here because I can intuitively. Not because I know I understand all the game's mechanics all that well.

Cool but you might have to put it in the Strategies forum. I'm gonna read along. I've developed so many bad habits just because I know I can get away with them. Watching your game should help me there.

Cool, I've never even won a match on Chieftain so this will help me loads XD

Love to see some more newbie-catered stuff around here. I've been way too scared to play any water-based maps so far. Mainly because in Age of Empires 3 I got shitrolled every single time I played water maps because I had no idea how to defend a coastline, so now I have aquaphobia in strategy games XD

Try playing on an archipelago map with:

Joao (Portugal), Willem Von Oranje (Dutch), or Ragnar (Vikings).

They work very well on water maps.

I'm glad that you went for random. It explained well how you can look at a leader/nation and dissect what kind of game you should expect to play, from turn 1.
