Hey Guys,

Oldy/Newby here. Played Civ I and II when they came out, but never got serious about it.

I just got Civ 4 a few weeks back and am trying to master it, so been reading here a bunch, and it has helped a lot. I can at least win Noble games now!!

Ya'll use a great deal of terms and acronyms here that mean zilch to me. Is there a thread that has a nice explanation of the common ones?

For example:
CE vs SE: I think this is Coin economy vs Specialist economy? and if so a brief explanation.

Whipping - this means sacrifice city pop to rush a unit, like a worker or settler?

Any and all feedback is Much appreciated!

Kong

CE - Cottage Economy. It means deriving most of one's commerce through the building and subsequent use of cottaged tiles.

A Specialist Economy (SE) relies on high food production in cities so that some population points can be turned into specialists instead of working city tiles.

There have been tomes written on the merits (or demerits) of each and why one is better than the other. The discussions can become like religious arguments in the fervor people express for one over the other.

Of course, both sides are wrong because a hybrid economy is better. :p

There is a nice thread that details a lot of acronyms, abbreviations and lingo, but I guess I did not enter the correct search terms. Eventually, I became overly frustrated and decided to post this rambling monologue instead.

'Yes' - the Slavery civic allows you to convert population into production. In addition to units you can also whip buildings and Wonders (albeit at a significant cost).

In earlier patches it was possible to secure a disproportionately large number of hammers per whipped citizen, which made this already attractive tactic even more appealing. This 'exploit' has since been corrected with the Warlords expansion.
