Hi there!
Great site you have here!
Could someone tell me if the upcoming Civ III is able to run under Win NT? There is no answer (yet) on the official Civ III-site from Fireaxis.

hi UffeC,

glad you like the site... <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif" border=0>

I don't know the answer to your question yet. Can civ2 and Alpha Centauri run on Win NT? If they do, then Civ3 probably can run on WinNT. <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/devil.gif" border=0>

Are you saying this because Civ3 is going to have the same underlieing game engine? If it doesn't have the same engine, then it might have different OS requirements. It might require Direct X 8.0 and I don't believe NT 4.0 supports higher than Direct X 4?
<u>Update:</u>:
Q. Is DirectX compatible with Windows NT 4.0?
A. Yes. However, the only version supported on Windows NT 4.0 is DirectX 3.0a. You must also install Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6.

hmm... I didn't know that. I think almost all new games require at least DirectX 6.0 to run nowadays.

If WinNT only supports DirectX 3.0, then the answer to UffreC's question is definitely NO.

None of our products are officially supported under NT4. However, some folks were able to get SMAC to run under NT, with the caveat that the sound was always screwed up. The culprit is NT's limited DirectX functionality.

Though I haven't tried running the current build of the game under NT, I'd imagine similar kinds of results.

I feel your pain, believe me. 95/98 can't hold a candle to NT's stability, but I had to switch because my gameplaying was suffering =)

And that functionality is not going to be improved because for all intents and purposes NT 4.0 is dead. Buy Whistler, the upgrade to Win2k, when it comes out, or jump to Linux and play FreeCiv until they port Civ3 to it, that's if you want stability. If not, come on over and join me with Win98SE! Where I am happy when I run for more than 4 days without restarting! And that is good for this operating system ;D

Yeah. Me and Fish have played a few times. He's got this other problem though. His colors keep reverting to 256 and he can't change it. This stops him from doing 3D stuff and playing Starfleet Command

. Ever hear of such a beast? (He's tried updating drivers, reinstalling windows/directx/the programs, etc...)

I had problems before when loading video drivers on a Win NT 4.0 system. I was loading the incorrect drivers. Double, no, triple check to make sure that you are loading the correct drivers for your video card. Also see if your video card is supported by Win2k.
Well, this info is for Fishheads <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif" border=0>
