Windows XP Pro SP2
Athalon XP 2700 processor
Asus a7n8x-Deluxe mobo
1 GB DDR Ram
Delta 1010LT audio card (however I am using the onboard card from my mobo)
ATI Radeon 9550 Video Card
All-In-Wonder Card
2 hard drives 160 GB and 120 GB

I am able to play the game for up to about a half of an hour. Then it does one of two things: Either restarts my computer and gives me no error. The other thing it does is it will sometimes freezes. No audio loop no nothing.

I have the direct download version, I have upgraded to the new 1.52 patch.

My Radeon card has the Catalyst 4.71 driver as the newest driver did not work with the 1.09 patch. Have not tried the newest driver.

I do have the newest nVidia audio driver.

It seems to freeze/crash with no rhyme or reason.

I am at work so I cannot post a dxdiag right now.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

Thoughts ..... suspect you may have tried them tho - you seem to have searched around a bit

- Latest ATI driver set (5.13)
- Download the Dec issue of Directx 9
- Total uninstall - manually deleting remaining bits in My Docs, Programs and the Documents and Settings/*releventUser* directory (some have found that patching over V1.09 caused some issues, and a total purge with clean install worked for them)
- Have a look at Neon Deon's checklist of system config related items, its in several posts, has helped many

EDIT: Just noticed "I have the direct download version, I have upgraded to the new 1.52 patch" if thats Direct2Drive version of Civ IV, it would need to be their patch not the Firaxis V1.52 patch

Done it all... still crashing... I actually have not done the neon deon checklist.
There are a lot of posts on this forum lol... if you have a link that would be helpful. The direct2drive update I have is the one from their site. The one for firaxis will not install on a d2d version

EDIT: Actually... it appears now that I only crash to desktop.. I haven't seen a full systme restart or a freeze yet... good news?... ish

Try moving the entire sound file out of the game directory to a new folder on the C drive. It worked for me, with both 1.0 and 1.52 (didn't bother with 1.09). I don't know why it works but I can play Huge maps with only 1 or 2 CTD's (the game has fostered low standards).
I found that turning off sounds in both ini. and options did not work. I had to remove the whole file.
