Civ IV G5 Performance

Last night, I got the black units, and when I scrolled out to see the globe, I got a giant head of Saladin. Kind of frightening and disturbing.

Slow... weird glitches... help.

I am starting to blame performance on my inability to win a game anymore.

Just one more note...

I played last night full screen and then in a window, and the game ran much more smoothly in a window. This makes no sense to me. I have the x800 card on a dual 2.0 G5. WHY???!!!

I think it has very little to do with the graphics card. As all the games like Battlefield 1942, Call Of Duty 1&2, UT 2004, etc. run like a charm in full resolutions on the G5. Civ IV is clearly very CPU intense and it seems that the code is everything else than optimized for the PowerPC, as Civ IV runs hundred times better on a older pc with an older graphics chip with only half the VRAM...

While not strickly CIV related, it looks like you G5 tower owners will be getting a nice new video card option.

Ironically, there are CIV screenshots at the bottom of the info page I linked.

Hmm, yeah. Forgot that it was only the last generation of G5s that had PCIe.

Wonder if AGP/PCI-X G5 owners will ever see any newer video upgrades.

Nope. The 6800 Ultra and x850 XT are the end of the line. Such is life with an AGP slot.

Before I start, I'll say I know nothing of Macs, I'm a PC fanboy, but have nothing against Macs.

To the point. Some people seem to be having issues where some graphics are blacked out, and since no-one has mentioned it...

...are those people running the latest drivers for their graphics cards?

I'm assuming Macs work in much the same way as PC's with regards to drivers.

Macs get their drivers from Apple. As long as a Mac is kept up to date using Software Update (the equivalent of Windows Update but without the "Genuine (dis)Advantage" spyware) then it will have the latest video drivers.
