Civ IV in the UK too....

I went to a Game this morning as well. They had the display boxes out. I brought it to the counter but alas no game. They told me that they had on their computers a release date of the 28th.

What is this law you guys are talking about where computer stores can't claim an earlier release date and not have the game? Seems a strange law as so many things can happen that a store might not necessarily be able to control.

This is getting silly. I know people are desperate but NOBODY can legally sell it within the UK before the official release date which is November the 4th. Get on with life till next week people! I know its disapointting, I am my self very disapointed that is out else where in Europe and not in the UK as I desperately want to play it however it's not going to be. The only chance you have of getting it before Friday is if you have ordered from somebody like Play and they deliver it early to guarantee that it gets to customers for the release date and the postal system works better than they estimate!

Here is an email I recieved about an hour ago to hammer this home;

Hi Rob

Thank you for your interest in the launch of Civilization 4. The confirmed release date for the game is 4th November 2005.

Regards

Ben

I took a short walk to my Woolworths and they had no release date at all for it, despite what it said on the website.

I look again at the site and it has changed to the 11th Nov!!!
That order has been cancelled!!

I feel this is getting beyond a joke, especially if you listen to the troubles certain people are having with theirs!

I so hope its worth it.

Rang Gamestation. They told me that their systems show 2nd December! However, someone in store thought it was supposed to be release today, now suspect 4th Nov, but they don't have any stock anyway.

Im going to spend the time waiting playing the AOE III demo.

Why couldn't Firaxis release a demo to appease the masses?

Is there something peculiar to the UK market that I've never heard about? Is piracy rampant here or something? I've only lived in the country 8 months and haven't bought any games yet (a fact that should have changed today), so I've never heard anything. What's the deal? The last I remember hearing, UK and U.S. were strong allies, so I don't think it would be some sort of international tension. Is there something in the base game perhaps to provocative for the UK market that is being reviewed? Does the UK censor games? It seems odd that if the game is fundamentally going to be the same, it could not be released along with the U.S. or even when the earliest European countries got it.

What are you blithering on about?

Take2 simply moved the official release date for Europe a week back to the 4th November. Nothing to do with the Eternal Alliance between the US and UK!! :)

Why would Take2, or anybody, need to move the official release back for some European country (very obviously not all: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, others?...) for any reason? If the game has to go through some extra bureaucratic process, then ok, that's life. But is this the case? If yes, what is this extra process for UK?

We're not talking something that hasn't been done a million times before: Release a game into a market. It can be complicated, but since I have so little experience with the nuances of UK law or atypical business practices concerning PC games (I specialize in a different type of gaming), I really have no idea what those complications would be for the UK market. Does anybody here know?

Although I don't think anybody knows concretely what caused the minor delay, I would think it is a safe bet to say it was the suppliers not recieving the final copy quick enough and not been able to mass reproduce the game, manuals and posters in time to make it UK stores. Doesn't it strike you that the two countries that are known for their efficiency, Swizerland and Germany are the two countries that make the release date?

Don't forget that Switzerland, Austria and Germany are German speaking nations and so have their own German version of the game. That version may have been more quickly manufactured and distributed than the English and French versions. Maybe?

Actually the games are multi-lingual. If I hadn't moved here from Austria 8 months ago, I would be be playing, more likely modding, Civ IV in English right now!

Ah but the packaging is different, as are the manuals and so.
