Civ IV runs terrible on a great computer.

I really do enjoy this delusional theory some of you are applying to acceptable fps vs genre. Perhaps i'll be as ignorant as the rest of you and assume that you're only defending the obvious performance problems because you're a diehard fanboy that couldn't be convinced of a problem if the game ran in negative colors. Ho ho how fun that was!

When using FRAPS to measure the frames it goes from 60 to 30 when I get anything more than a city and a half in my view. Having the fps DROP and RISE by 30 is NOT smooth gameplay no matter what type of game you are in fact playing.

The game has obvious problems that the developers tried to address and are most likely going to continue trying to solve. I can respect that and I do infact consider myself lucky i'm not crashing (as sad as that is). It is a great game otherwise.

Fuzzy wuzzy was a bear.

Then go into the CIVIV ini file and set this line to = 30

; Set max frame rate clamp (0 means none)
SetMaxFrameRate = 0

After you do that, turn off your fps monitor, then wipe your memory of this incident and go enjoy the game!:D

Any other problems with the game?

Then please post a dxdiag.

If it bothers you that bad then open civ4 config file and change SetMaxFramerate= from "0" to "30". Now your games will have a steady framerate of 30fps. Basicly games like Pirates have this as default.

Oops!

Sorry Smidlee I was typing when you were posting.;)

I doubt his patch will help you unless you are CTD for those specs. His patch didn't helped me but I got a slight improvement with 1.52.

V1.9 is out? Great news - where do I download it?

Zy

There is no 1.9. There's a 1.09 and 1.52. You can go to "Advanced" (main menu option), and "Check for Updates" to download it.

While your eyes may not be able to tell the difference between 30 and 60 fps ALONE, when combined with your fingers trying to work the controls, I beleive they can.

I would be happy with > 10 fps though.
2400+

Gf6600GT oc.

Should I really be getting 10 fps on a SMALL MAP with TWO AI's on LOW GRAPHICS settings? This is the sort of thing the original poster is talking about. Given the graphical quality of the game and the limited amount of background calculations required it should be zipping along on all of our systems. Instead it bogs.

But look on the bright side, Firaxis is currently working on an optimal solution for paging out geometry data. They are also re-working some of the game models so they do not have as many polygons.

Or as real game companies who don't deserve to go bankrupt would call it (say it with me here folks...)
