Civ IV v Girlfriend IV

Stay with her if your out of college. Getting much more difficult to meet a good looking, normal single woman as I age. That said, I have lost more than a handful good looking normal single women to various games over the past ten years.

My wife has tolerated all the various incarnations of Civ since Civ I. So I think I'm pretty safe. She may even buy me the game for Christmas.

So far, she has resisted the lure. Civ 4 may be the game that brings both her and our son into the fold. I'm kind of dreading Civ 5. By then, my daughter will be old enough, and technology improvements will make 4-way multiplayer by wireless economically feasible in our household. It could get ugly real fast. :D

Guess I'm one of the lucky ones as well...my wife has 2 copies of the the preorder "collectors" box coming...mainly because she hated the fact she did't get the nice tinbox for Civ 3 and I did......
Yea she's as addicted as me:goodjob:

If you guys are open-minded, maybe you should introduce your wives to pdathert. ;)

I'm female!
My husband was against my recent graphics card update cos he just knew I'd be civving all the time. I've tried to get him into it but all he wants to do is trample MAs over the French and blast off a load of nukes... sigh

He "has the emotional depth of a teaspoon" when it comes to Civ.
(1,000 points to anyone who guesses where that quote came from!)

Harry Potter?

I just realized that I am also on girlfriend IV since civ I. Just this morning she asked if there was any sex in the game! She can't imagine me spending hours on end just reading the forums about some silly computer game without it having something to do with sex. She even sneaks around and tries to catch me looking at something sinster when I am online.

I am lucky though, she did not complain when I spent $200 on video card and memory upgrades. I also get to play mostly undisturbed during the day while she works. As long as I get the laundry done and supper on the table when she gets home, I got about 6 hours a day of Civ IV playing time.

Where do you people find ladies who appreciate/tolerate computer games?

HILARIOUS! I agree with minger. and isn't that really what we all want? a girl who likes u AND plays civ w/ u!

Be careful here. I love to fish, and was delighted when I had a GF who also loved to fish. the problem arose when it became obvious that she could outfish me at any time and any place. She is now an ex-gf...she didnt like being with someone who could as she put it barely bait their hook. MY ego and my heart both crashed.
So be careful what you ask for - you might get it.

I guess I am one of the lucky ones as well. While my wife doesn't play video games, she is buying me the Xbox 360 in November, and she only complains if I spend too much time online playing poker(hence longer than 6 hrs @ a time:D ).

She is the type that if I spend a fair portion of either Saturday or Sunday with her, she will give me a "free video game pass" on the other day, she'll take my son and go shopping and leave the house to me for most of the day.:goodjob:

I tried to get her into games, but she doesn't have the patience.

I dated this girl when I was a senior in college. She was just getting a late start at a different school and her brother had given her his old Compaq with a copy of Civ. 2 on it. I had discovered Civ 2 over the course of the previous summer and was absolutley addicted. (I kept a copy of the game installed on a Zip disk that I carried with me everywhere so I could pop into a computer lab any time I wanted and play just one more turn.)

One day, she calls me from school and tells me that there is this game I had to play. (Civ 2 :) ) We had never discussed video games before, let alone Civ.

Needless to say, she is now my wife and we sometimes spend entire weekends in our home office playing civ, her on her Dell and me on my Mac...

:goodjob: My Girlfriend is going to be away for work wednesday to friday next week:band: ...cIV time....could not plan it better...though i am off Monday, its going to be a long day of waiting the day before it comes out..grrrrrr

ha ha funny tread, i can relate tho, my husband and I decided to get two TV's when we moved in together, sins he likes sports and i don't lol, but as it turns out,he loves civ too:eek: so now we only ever argue about who gets to play , never what to watch
*sigh
i think a lap top and some wireless net is on the Christmas list this year

Just to ressurect this thread and say that Girlfriend IV is becoming Wife I next weekend.

Thanks all.

I'm very young and single, but I've seen a lot around me.

The question is do you plan to marry her. Paradoxically, the girl that you are seriously thinking of marrying, is the one that you shouldn't adjust to too much while dating. You will do plenty of adjusting once you are married. I've also heard that the US has a ridiculous divorce rate, probably because they are so individualistic and have unrealistic expectations for spouses in general.

If you're spending like 5 hours a week, then yeah, she needs to accept that true gamers don't play games to kill time, but make time to play games. But more than 10 hours a week and it becomes very detrimental to your life.

Congrats. Beware of Wife I. Women can change after you get married.

I used to be able to play Scrabble with Wife I, but now she gets really, really pissed off when she loses. She said that she was always pissed off, but now she feels that we're close enough that she doesn't have to hide it from me.

Naturally, I have sworn off Scrabble (and Civ) games against her. I prefer my nights warm and cozy.

A girl playing civ with me? Out of my closest friends few dare to play me in video games. I have a madden opponent or two, had ONE (ONE!) warcraft friend, and 0 in many games like heroes of might and magic. Sad thing is, people play it. They just won't play me. I'm "too cheap", "too good", or playing me "just isn't fun". In other words, they suck. It's not like I talk trash either. That's their department, if they manage a lead for a fraction of a second, they'll go wild. I try not to resort to that, in part because having experienced it I know how annoying it is, and in part because I'd run out of things to say after walking all over them so much ;).

Anyway, they shouldn't be mutually exclusive, just balance time. It's just one thing among many. Do drop one if you stop enjoying it though.

For me, Civ IV > GF IV at the moment. It's a lot more flexible with work/school timing and the fact that I'm pretty broke while going through school.
