Multiple newspapers have released articles about a new study about the richest people in the world, and the richest person is a leader in Civilization, Mansa Musa. The values have been scaled and adjusted for inflation, and it turns out that Mansa Musa is on top of the list, with an amount of 400 Billion $. People, who have read the Civ4 civilopedia, might remember that his journey caused a break down in the gold price in whole africa, which seems totally possible with that much money.

On another note, multiple newspaper used the Civilization 4 depiction of Mansa Musa in their articles, to be named The Daily Mail, The Daily Star, The Mirror and The Express.

Thanks to Fluffy Rabbit and Kochman for bringing this to our attention.

Unrelated to the above, many followers of Sid Meier's work will probably be pleased to hear that there is an earth sized planet orbiting Alpha Centauri. While it seems that it is not a habitable planet, because it travels around the twin system in a far too close distance, this does not yet rule out that there might be other planets.

Thanks to choxorn and fdrpi for this hint.

Very interesting on both of those points. I saw that the Drudge Report was actually using a Mansa Musa LH that looked like it was from Civ 3 at one point above a link to the artcle, so I'm excited to know that I was right. I don't know if it would be correct to say that he was the richest man ever, but it was an interesting story nonetheless.

Regarding the planet around Alpha Centari, IIRC there are 4 known planets, including this one, in that system, and all of the rest are gas giants. Given that the AC system is the closest to Earth and that we have been looking at it for a while I find it hard to believe we will be finding more earth-like planets there, but it would make an interesting setting for a SMAC remake (hint-hint Firaxis) ;)

And they say video game's make you dumber!

They might make you forgetful.

This thread from more than 3 months ago is about this very same thing. The article that the new articles reference is the one this thread was pointing to.

So perhaps working for a news organization makes you both slow and a copycat since it took them over 3 months to republish the information that was already available elsewhere for that entire time. (And perhaps longer - I don't know when that article was published as they have changed the date on it to be much more recent, perhaps they updated the numbers slightly or something. But it was first referenced on CFC in early July.)
