Civ V - Beta 2

- lacking options for anexed cities - at least making em stop grow have to be built in - without that they are a too uncontrolled huge unhappyness generator
- scientists as main/only real science producing system feels a bit flawed - like that they are no choise - once u got libary u r gonna fill it
- You mean puppet cities iso annexed cities?
- Can you explain the scientist sentence?

OK, now some pointers for others:
forget horseman!
- use warriors and upgrade em to swords/longswords - they should never die - while horses can die sometimes to city bomb/unit attacks - also is upgrading way cheaper/easier then building
- expand early and fast, reading through this thread i got the (right) impression that way too many guys stay occ or 2city for way too long - get settler sp 1. and expand to 3 citeies as soon as the sp is awaylable - then u can do what u did intend to do in cap (wonders/lib/...) but have 2 more cities to further expand/build military
- use the gold income from all the traded lux for buiing city stats which lux u lack
- the only REAL important tech is banking for forbiden palace - this 1 tech/building totaly changes game - forget other "slinghsots"

-I think from the first gauntlet people used horsemen iso swordsmen, because for the latter you need Bronze- and Iron Working. And then your puppets would build things like barracks and other buildings with high maintenance. Also 4 horsemen are quick and can destroy a city in one or two turns, so small chance that they will die.
- With each new city you need 30% more culture points, so that's why people don't expand too quick. But it's not that much for the first few policies, I agree.
- "...for buiing city stats which lux u lack" You mean buy happy buildings like circus.
- If you want to go to Reinaissance age quick Acoustics and Astronomy (and even Navigation) are quicker to reach than banking. How would you 'slingshot' to banking exactly (because it needs the expensive Chivalry).

finsihed - turn 314 - 1470 :(

in end my lack of experience did cost me about 10 turns -at least :(
still was kinda fun

what I did do bad:
- anexed rome what d have been my best production city 5 turns after apollo was finished ... this city was a beast - no wonder rome had 3 wonders after like 150t when i captured it - totaly forgot about all my puppets - building apolo in it instead of my size 8 cap d have gotten about 8 turns allone.

Pretty Ironic that I did build 2 space parts in cities which had been puppets untill then ...

what I did was pretty easy ... expand while managing happyness every turn to stay at -9 :) - build some important wonders in cap and have a 5 man army (+general) killling 1 guy after another to pupet some cities and get room for even more.

If puppeting is best choise I m not sure - I allways thought I could raze em later anyway and was surprised when I wanted to and it didnt work. On other hand they kept me pretty nicly rolling all game - espacially cash wise - as all my cities didnt produce any cash but have been into libraries/on hills onl.

What I did do generally:
gather lux and money (trading a lot with ai also keeps it happy so they dotn attack) - keep science treaties rolling with all civs u dont want attack - get room and use it ...

most important techs:
-sailing to scout all map
-compass to conect cities
-banking for forbidden palace

dunno why some people are so keen about getting into ren superfast it doesnt offer that much - i d never ever put too much ephasis into that. Also I was happy that my 1. great dude was a engi not a scientist to have forbidden palace in few turns.

Another (good?) hint is thta barbs dont build (lot) ships early on - so u r save to scout map with warris/workboats early on if u get sailing somewhat fast - just be a bit careful if there is a camp nearby.

Also as said I dont see the point in horses over swords - u have got warris anyway to scout and can use the shields for the horses for settlers which are more useful anyway - speed isnt a real factor espacially in this map. Also they upgrade cheaply to longswords which kill everything untill tanks

1470 is still a really nice time.
I am surprised that you didnt beat my time as you were atleast 10 turns ahead of me when you started on Apollo program.

It opens the freedom tree which is imo the best happiness generator in the game for ICS. Also it make maritime cities give more food so you can make settlers faster.
And finally it opens up the Rationalism tree for Secularism. Atleast for me i have found this policy extremelly effective because i run with soo many specialists and unemployed people.
Also as said I dont see the point in horses over swords
I guess its abit down to playstyle. I really like the extra mobility though.

When playing ICS alot of people really love to go for the Order tree and i have respectfully never understood that. It comes too late and once your ICS play begins to roll you just wont have the culture to go into it.(unless you expand slower than you should/could) I also dont get why people want to make monuments. Its imo a waste.
But there is alot to learn so i might be totally wrong. ;)

Beta 2 Gauntlet is now closed. :)

Good work pagh80 and thanks for everyone who took part in the discussions :goodjob:

Please, no more Archipelago maps for awhile. I tried to do a second attempt at Gauntlet 2, but the combination of map + epic speed just destroyed my will to finish.

30t apollo .....

as said rome d have gotten it in about 20 turns if i bought a factory for it .....

also i picked this policy which increase building speed like 50 turns after i got the (as I know now last policy) - had hopes to get another policy - was wrong there - should calc more .. in end i got 6 sp when i even had oracle - guess thats a bit low.

I think that this is even the best policy path for these game setting - 25%? production bonus for buildings is HUGE - should have adopted right when I could have.

well in en I gotta say this game showed my pretty well how bad the design flaws of this game is and that is merly in beta stage - more like alpha .. so many confort settigs like managing cities globaly - are missing and the code is so but .... the game mechanics havent changed since civ3 - WTH do the ai need 10x the time to ccalc as it did in civ3/civ4 when my pc is triple as fast?

@tommynt
Really nice. 93 cities and no university in the capitol which has a bare 19.5 bpt.

92 Universities aint enough? :)

nonrolling overflows are dumb ...

whats pretty ironic is that i missed after like 200+ hours of mirco choping the last wood in my land as I had deleted all my workers - could have choped of another 1 turn there ..

in retro this could easily be done in less then 300 turns - pupeting (apart maybe some supercities - usually caps which are better to anex anyway) is just dumb - as puppets consume all pop growth once u are green and therefore cant "mirco" (via disable/able) pops. And the tiles puppets use - well I dont understand - often I saw em using a 2 grass tile instead of a worked cow or sea tiles (u think they should "focus" at least on something).

Or whats the opinion of others for pupeting in a expanding strat?

Also can some1 explain me WTH I did get like +30 happyness for building sistine chapel (+33% cult)? dont see any sp or building giving happy for cult - what am I missing?

I've not seen that before. Is it possible that some coliseums and/or assigning specialists occurred just after it was built and before you noticed? Happiness is round per city for specialists: 1 specialist is 1 happiness while 3 specialists is 2 happiness.
