Civ V: Gods & Kings on entry level 15" mid2012 MBP

Hey all,

so I dropped £50 on the game and the expansion and I'm finding it nearly unplayable. I'm using the default (as low as possible) video settings, contacted aspyr, deleted that .plist file and it's still a pain to watch. Panning from city to city is all skippy and stuttery. It has even crashed a couple of times. I simply don't have fun playing the game.

Any suggestions?

What's the GPU on that machine?

NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 512MB of GDDR5 memory

I dont recall the setting/command, but make sure it's actually using the 650M. MBPs use the integrated Intel HD4000 for most tasks, and occasionally forget to switch over when the going gets tough. It should run fairly smoothly at medium-high settings on a 650M.

Here's some info. The article is focused on improving battery life on the rMBP, but the solution works on any MBP and regardless of whether your goal is to force the integrated or force the discrete GPU.

Now, why your MBP might be getting stuck on integrated (or even if that's the actual problem), I'm not sure, but it's something to try.

When I use gfxcardstatus with Lion to *change* GPUs on my 2009 17" MBP, Civ V won't launch, or more precisely launch and quit with a cryptic and irrelevant error message.

(It will launch if you switch back, or use the Apple control panel to switch GPUs.)

I haven't tested this on ML yet.
