Civ VI - Beta Gauntlet I

I think I will restart and handpick some religious fanatics...

Who are the best opponents? We are allowed 5. In my couple of games so far I've only noticed Gandhi, Frederick and Gilgamesh producing religious units to fight against. I would have thought Saladin would but haven't seen anything from him....

This is really a lot faster then I have managed but my games so far
I tried the same approach on Immortal, and it works much better with the AI. On Prince you can wait forever to get those relics through martyrs so you may need to have Kandy in the game too.
I tried to use religion spammers like Sal and Gandhi, but ended up babysitting Delhi which was constantly under siege by barbs. The Prince AI is just laughable.

Gandhi, Saladin and Catherine are good choices, I think. And Peter tends to go for SH early. Pericles is probably a bad idea. He doesn't care much about religion but creates a fair amount of tourism with his wonders.

Any chance those that finished have the seeds for their maps, would be nice to run them.

I am trying gonna try with some hand picked civs now

In my game I had Kandy ofc - if you don't I think you better restart game. It's quite annoying you can't choose which city states spawn in your game. Also I got my first relic on turn 12 from first tribal village which was very lucky. The others two relics I got from natural wonders.

The main mistake I think was building Oracle. Wasted a lot of time doing so. I only had 3 cities with 3 Holy Sites and 3 Amphiteatres. I wonder if making more cities ASAP is better strategy, so can house more relics. But getting them via martyr is kinda tricky. I didn't use any exploitable tactics such as infinite gold via selling units or selling workers after using 2 charges. But i've chopped a lot of trees to fasten my production - saves a LOT of turns.

One more thing: I think you can't start getting tourist from civz you haven't met. So it's best to meet all others civs asap for fastest victory, so on continents you need to have atleast 1 naval unit and go for ocean tech. And it seems civs who build many cities and have lots of population makes it much harder to win via culture, due to requirement to attract more their tourists. Dunno how it works exactly yet.

Got a T129 relics game this time. In the first game I only had one AI on the continent, this time I was alone. This is actually terrible, and I have realized now that killing England in my first game was a mistake. I'd have won much faster if I let her live and contribute visitor tourists. On the bright side, I had Kandy on my continent again. An ideal map would have 3-4 religious AIs and Kandy on the continent.

This time I had GBR in an expo which meant slightly faster Cartography I guess, and I sent the apostles away as soon as I could. Apparently they get the Martyr promotion once you finish Mont St Michel even if you'd spawned them before that, so there's no reason to wait. The AIs' faith generation was just as bad as last time and I think only 2 of my martyr apostles actually died.

How many relics did you get from Kandy? And which wonders did you build?

I got one relic from a goody hut, 3 from Candy (delayed finding one NW on my continent when I saw the yields of tiles adjacent to it) and 2 from martyr apostles. So a whopping 4 out of 6 relics were just pure luck... I built Mont St Michel in the capital, and a few random wonders in the cities that had finished the religious buildings and had nothing else to build. Hanging Gardens, Pyramids, and Oracle if I remember correctly.

Well luck or no... it still required you to set up six cities and build some wonders, get Cartography in time AND get the relics which all in all is terrific :goodjob:
AI missionary spam frequency seems also somewhat luck based, and sometimes they focus on someone else. Use up all charges before you can attack them and get wounded.
Did you OB and trade with everyone? Steal any GW from the AI?

EDIT: Don't think it was a mistake you killed England. You would have had to compete for Kandy. Besides, it's faster than founding all cities yourself. Especially in this game.

Getting Kandy on same island is a pain it seems. 23 city states and there is 9 in a small game? Then 50% chance that you spawn on same continent. So the odds
would be around : 9/23 * 1/2 = 19%. If this checks you have a resonable start and be the first to meet them so you can get suzerain fast. I fail to roll maps with these properties so hard to try this out :-D

Someone suggested restarting if you don't have Kandy on the map, how do you know that?

I think it might be enough if you can complete their quest fast. You should be able to put off triggering natural wonders with extra careful scouting as vadalaz suggested. (And you probably need to kill the AI that got there first :mischief: )

I shared open borders with everyone, but I don't know if that really did anything... I had matching governments with Gandhi and Peter, yet I got the same 5 visiting tourists from autocratic America as I did from oligarchic India, and a measly 3 from Russia. It seems their domestic tourism affects that more than anything?

To me it seems the OB matters. In my games the tourism seemed to drop if an AI got mad at me. I don't know about the governments. The civopedia says something about attracting more tourists from matching or opposing governments so I guess they all qualified. Maybe it's only important to have the same government level? To not advance too fast to say Merchant Republic?

You can see these bonuses/penalties by mouseover the tourists icons in the <<Our Visitors From>>in the Culture win condition screen.

Yes, but it simply says "-x% for different government", and the civopedia explicitly mentions opposing governments attracting more tourists. Also, I'm a bit puzzled on how this gets calculated. In my last game I got -125% from Greece for different religion, government etc. and only -18% from Roosevelt, yet the # of tourists was the same.

Won on turn 189 on a what I think is quite a good map. I might replay it. My biggest problem was that I could not place the relics anywhere i.e. I could get more relics with martyrs but 4 cities were already full. If I replay I will build 6 cities.

Relics are 100% the key. Other tourism factors are so small compared to relics with the 3x relic bonus.

Nice, any chance you can post the save file? or both seeds

I got t155 win with the relics strategy. Looks kind of broken with the huge tourism output from relics.

I had a great starting location with a military CS just close by that helped me build settlers. Got Divine right on t98 and wonder on t110. Had some trouble making my Apostles die, maybe it would be good with more religous enemies?

No Kandy in my game, what does Kandy do?
