--Athens currently has 5 Scientists. This is a trick for cities that are otherwise not very useful. Once they get to size 5, make all workers the same specialist. This way, the city will contribute more to taxes/science than it would normally. This works even if tax/science rate is 0. you just have to make sure to put them back to work before the city starves. In Civ II, you can do it even if your food deficet is 100fpt and you have 1 food left in the box, but I'm not sure about Civ I.
