Civ3 or civ4?

i personally think Civ4 is great... dunno why it gets such a bum rap. graphics are great, everything is very clear, everything is easy to find, game options are solid.

and it plays great on my laptop, a E1505, T2500, x1400 256mb, 1 gig ram...

i think most of the people who hate the game are due for a upgrade.

i tried playing some multiplayer tonight, and people were complaining to turn off animations, and basically turning ALL the graphics options on low... use the single unit, blah blah. basically just ruined the experience for me, these people need to go back to Civ3.

:mischief:

Listen, I just got an AMD Athlon 64 XP 3800+ with 2 GB RAM and Civ4 works PERFECTLY*. Yet I still prefer civ3 over it. What does that tell you? ;)

*Maximum resolution, maximum effects for everything, standard map in modern age - ~3 seconds a turn. :p

Not so. I preordered Civ4 when it first came on the market AND I bought a new machine with more than enough power to run it. I was soooo excited and thoroughly prepared to love Civ4.

The game played perfectly right from the start...and I was bored to tears with it. I kept trying and waiting for the "just one more turn" feeling to sweep me away...like it did from my 1st try at Civ3...and it just never happened with Civ4.

I have to agree with Mirc!!! :D

I think you'll have to try multiple times.

The more often I try an other Civ4 game, the more I'm liking it.

But I remember it was the same for Civ3, after I bought Civ3, I played it a couple of times and left it to become addicted to Diablo2 instead, after player D2 almost nonstop for 2 years, I played a couple of more Civ3 games again And I was hooked.

When I first played Civ4 a couple of times I didn't like it as much either, but I played some more Civ3 games and then tried an other one.
I'm still playing Civ3 games most of the time, but it happens more and more often I'm having Ideas about things I'd like to try in Civ4.

Currently, the thing that stops me most is the fact that it doesn't run as snappy as civ3 on my system.

BTW, This very post seems to be my 1k milestone... :ninja:

I tried that, it went the other way for me - when I bought it I was really excited to play it, then I didn't really like it, then I left it untouched for months, then sometimes when I tried to pick it up again I got bored in a day or so. When I got a new computer, I gave it a try again, and it went the same way so far: down.

That you like to have a superbly sophisticated computer system. :D

Civ1-3 have on thing in common:
You, the human player, have the means to employ totally different strategies than the AI Civs.
In Civ1, that usually meant to buy all AI cities once you're in Democracy; in Civ2, it was Fundamentalism and propaganda, in Civ3, proper micromanaging of citizens + n-fer trades + artillery.

Now, that also means that on lower levels (whatever they are, depending on your dedication), the game seemed a bit too easy. But, it also gave you the opportunity to dig out of insane holes, once you've learned to utilize those strategies.
You can win a Civ3 game with two arms behind the back, compared to the AI - AW, xCC, insanely lousy starts, Sid.
And those games are rewarding to me.

Now, CIV - you are forced to use exactly the same tactics as the (admittedly, far better) AI.
CIV vs AI emulates a MPP feeling, but with boni for the AI players. Not my game.

HI,

Im looking to buy a new Civ game-can anyone tell me which is better
Civ 4 or Civ 3 and how they compare??

(I currently have CIv 3 vanilla,so if you can tell me how Civ 3 conquests compares as well it would be appreciated....)

yeah man, get conquests, SCREW civ 4 too by the way
i love civilization, but they created an almost completly different game...i'd rather have better gameplay over 3d, which is really why i hate it. the 3dness killed it in my eyes

If you decide to go for Civ3, instead of 4, then by all mean, make it the latest version, sure.

I'd advice anyone who is planning to buy Civ3 to buy the "CIVILIZATION III: COMPLETE" version.
A single box that comes with both Vanilla, Play the World, and Conquests, all patched up to the last patch.

Here is how the box looks like:

So don't get confused with "gold edition" or "world edition" or such.

thanks

can you tell me what the differences are between civ 3 vanilla and conquests??
whats good about conquests??

Well for starters the box to Conquests(Civ Complete) is much more shinier! and really it just gets better from there.
Seriously better everything. Most important for me is mod combatability. Think of Conquests as a console needed to play' 3rd expansion type' add-ons made by pro designers who have posted their wares free and very easy to access and install. Its these 3 or 4 X pack type mods made in the last 2 years that bring CIv3 to highest levels of true civving in my opinoin

Larger maps that hold more cities, units, and Civs while still improving turns times ontop of reduced interace delays make the second biggest reason to get Conquests. Believe me I could go on but this is to easy ;)

Take care and may you have many joyous Civ3 experiences ahead.

The changes in upgrading from vanilla to Conquests are far too numerous to list here, but here's a link to a complete list posted after the upgrade came out. http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=104294

I think most of us who have been playing Civ3 for a long time began with vanilla and moved to Conquests, and we've never wanted to go back, so I'd recommend it. OTOH, if you ask the same question in the Civ4 forums, you'd probably get a completely different answer.

They are two completely different games, and most of those who love either one will champion it strongly. I've tried both and prefer Civ3, but that's just me. :D

The link gmaharriet provided outlines just about everything, although a few things have changed slightly with patches. The Conquest scenarios are the highlight of the expansion, and, IMO, it would be well worth buying Conquests for that alone.

I'd buy Conquests first. It'll provide many more months of enjoyment, and by then you might be able to get a better deal on CivIV than now, too.

You don't need to buy CivIII Complete, though. You already have the Vanilla CivIII disk, so instead look for a Conquests Expansion box. It also includes the Play the World expansion, so after getting it you'll have the complete collection. If you can find one, it might save you a bit of money. They look like this:
