Hi, I recently started playing Civ3: PTW, and have a few questions about Diplomacy, even after reading thru some of the FAQs. I cant seem to get an alliance or MPP agreement with the other civ's, no matter how much butt-kissing I do they arent going beyond the "polite" phase for some reason. I am more advanced than them, and was thinking maybe its that "jealousy" thing going on? But even after I share my Tech's with them, give them gold, and have not screwed ANY of them over even Once, they still wont go beyond Polite with my Civ. Any Ideas beyond giving them stuff repeatedly, or any other good ways to get them to "like me" better so that I can get them in some alliances?

Also, I was wondering if there were any cheats/trainers or files I could edit, that would let me manually set a civilization to hold me in high regard, or allow me to setup an alliance/treaty that way? Thank you, and great website btw!! :)

Welcome to CFC [party]

Did you get an embasy with them? Or the right techs? Making them gracious often requires a lot of effort, or just simply being on their side when there's a war. The AI (AI1) usually won't sign a MA vs another AI (AI2) if you or AI1 aren't at war with AI2. I can usually get ROPs and MPPs easy, because I don't break treaties.

Thank you for the welcome Blue! :)

No Embassies yet, Im not that far along I dont think, since I havent seen the option for it yet and dont have roads to the other civs yet. I will check again tho, just to make sure. Also, I havent broken any treaties at all, so I wouldnt have any reason for them not to trust me.

The only other thing I can think of, is that I know Im about 6-7 Techs ahead of them via wonders and science focus, since theyre always asking me for them and I have the option to trade them...but I dont know if envy really applies in this game? My advisor said something about one of the civs being envious or something along those lines, thats why I wondered if that could affect it?

Don't need roads, all you need is Writing to create embassies. Once you have those (embassies) you can then create alliances with the right techs. I don't recall the right techs off hand, but I think Nationalism is one of them. Might be the only one you need.

Now, if you want to trade with them, you'll need to be connected to their capital via roads, harbors, or airports. Or a combination of the three.

Also, if you're going for a diplomatic victory, I would suggest not getting into any MPP's with anybody. You don't want to be drawn into a war. Offer them something else instead, even if you have to give it away.

I believe Writing will give you Embassys and Rops and MA's. Printing Press the ability to sell communications with other civs, Navigation/Astronomy the ability to trade maps. I believe Nationalism gives you Trade Embargoes and MPP's, and Espionage the ability to spy.

You must have an embassy in the country to do any of these - no road to their capital required, just contact them - can even be a curragh or galley or a wandering scout/warrior in your territory - you don't even have to know exactly where their capital is. Then you can click on the little E on the bottom right data bug to pay to open up an embassy.

Edit: C3C only - I'v never played Vanilla or PTW at all. Keep forgetting their are 3 versions - sorry.

Actually, Map Making gives you the ability to trade maps. In Conquests this is moved to Navigation. In C3C, Printing Press allows you to trade contacts.

Changes made in my post - Thanks! :)

You don't need to do any butt kissing to have alliances. I had games where I went to war against one civ and they were still annoyed with me when I got them into an alliance against someone else. You just need to be at war with the civ you want to ally against, and be prepared to pay lots of gold. Sometimes you have to give them some good techs to get an alliance. But once you have an alliance they will probably go from "polite" to "gratious".

Also, MPPs are very dangerous. The AI goes crazy with MPP, but they are a good way to drag you into a war you're not prepared to fight. Avoid them.
