Xp pro 1920x1080 screen resolution. In edit civ3 rules under World Sizes, I set the huge map sizes to various settings above 160x160. Even as low as 180x180. But when I would generate map, it is always 160x160, or sometimes a little less. what am I doing wrong?

The custom rules typically go in a custom BIQ file. To use the custom rules you pick Civ Content from the main menu and choose that BIQ. That should lead you through a new game menu that will follow your settings. Of course you have to save that BIQ file from the editor first.

You can also choose custom map sizes from the default new game screen. The max map size in any case is 256x256 which as far as I know is a hard-coded limit.

I never made one larger than 250x250, but I have played on larger. Up to 362x362 iirc. Just note that you should adjust the tech cost, if larger than 160x160 (huge default). I use 650 for 250x250 and would use 750 for 362x362. This was based on tiles in a given map. 400 is the default for huge maps.

Thanks man! I have almost always created my own maps since the game first came out. But I have always added copper, fishing fleet, Newsweek and religious units to the rules. And infested the map with barbarian camps! My test 1, test 2, test 3, etc all shows up in the civ content. But adding islands and terrain to the map editor still shows only 160x160 or less. I have been trying for a 320x240 primarily small islands. My games have all been successful w/very few crashes that I immediately went back and changed and fixed them, but I do not recall trying to play a much larger map. If I play this game (test ") in civ content at 320x240 (as it shows) I only designed a 160x160 in the map edtor with many hours work, what is going to be in those extra 160x80 terrain tiles? Or will it crash when I get there?

 Is this true? I knew you could change things like the Culture-and Domination limits on the 'Choose your Civ' screen, but I did not know this!

So of course I had start up Civ3 to test it, but I can't figure out how it's done? I've only got 6 options under 'World Size' (but AFAIK, the 6th option, 'Random', just picks one of the 5 default sizes, Tiny to Huge).

Do tell...?

Ok I just created test 3.3. I created a super galley with moves of 100. Civ content shows test 3.3 as map size:320×240. The actual tiles are only 159x159. It has to be somewhere in the map editor or .text or .ini files, but where?

Under "edit civilization 3 rules", go to the "world sizes" tab. Huge shows 160x160. Raising this doesn't make a difference, you still only have a 159x159 map whether it is in civ content or scenarios. Sometimes even smaller! Like 149x149!

Create a super galley with moves of 100 in units (same as galley icon 29, PRTO_Galley) and you will quickly tell that the map is never larger than 159x159.

For a longer time Civ 3 modders thought, that 362x362 is the maximum map size for Civ 3 maps. El Mencey created such a map a long time ago. In this post Quintillus showed, that the tile limit for Civ 3 is 65,535 tiles and posted about a 420 x 312 map: https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/earth-420-x-312-wip.652386/

Even the old TeTurkan map was 256x256.

My mods CCM1 and CCM2 hold a random map size of 250x250. Earlier versions of CCM1 had much bigger map sizes, but to have fun on such big maps needs frequently a lot of additional settings. Per example, there must be enough cities to fill such a big map (the NCL patch is not working well), the trade system should be cut down to avoid 'monster' turn times, the speed of ships and the range of aircraft must be adjusted, otherwise your sailing ships will face battleships when they arrive at their destination, only to name some of the problems of big maps.

Please play CCM2 and you will see, that 159x159 is not the limit for a C3C map size.

I know (kinda sorta!) how to use the Editor, but Puppeteer said you could have a custom map-size just by going through the "New Game" option (i.e. an otherwise unmodded epic-game). Still not sure how that's done.

It's certainly possible to make a "rules-only" mod that generates a random-map of >160*160; that's how CCM and RARR both work (and also my mod-in-progress). And you can also use the Editor itself to generate a random-map of bigger-than-Firaxis-Huge size ("Map: Generate Map"). I just tested it at 240*240, and when I turned on "View: Grid Co-ordinates" I can see numbers from 0,0 in the top left to 239,239 in the bottom right.

And yes, there are plenty of Huge+ (Earth) map-mods out there, several of which are installed by default with Civ3Complete. Right now I'm in the middle of a succession game (using Conquests rules) on Marla Singer's World Map (.bix), which is 256 x 204. So it's definitely possible, though I'm not sure how that one was made (maybe using the "bmp-to-bic" conversion utility which was uploaded to CFC a very long time ago...?)

But what you can't do in the standard Firaxis Editor, is load an already-made map and then make it bigger simply by changing the WorldSize: that just won't work (although I believe there are also a few home-brew utilities that can do that: maybe Steph's Editor?).

Yes, this is not possible with the firaxis editors 1.00 and 1.03, but there is a tool named MapTweaker. Many years ago I used it for the SOE map to cut out the US east coast and to add some terrain in Russia for reasons of gameplay, but all in all the new map was smaller, not bigger. Today I have no clue any longer how I did handle it and if it would work on a 64 bit pc.

genius! Older generation that knew how to do this has moved on. But I an still stuck on it. Heck, I was nearly 40 when this game came out! If you look at the co ordinance numbers, they just start dramatically jumping up as you increase the map size. I use a plains tile and count as I go, always 159x159 or less. How is it possible to fit more tiles in the same size squares? Sounds like bankers to me!

This would be great, man! But I cannot find your link here.

Actually I was 41 when this came out. But am still a kid. Dont ever grow up, or you'll just get boring. My pa fought the germans across Italy, he was in his 30's at this time. He always told me this. He died as a kid at 99 1/2!

Um, apparently I hallucinated that. And I've been contradicted on the 256x256 max size, too. So...probably ignore everything I said in this thread. I said the custom thing from (faulty) memory...the 256x256 limit I had in memory but actually double-checked it...well, I remember double-checking it, but now I can't find where I thought I found it.

Maybe I need to cut back on the...uh...whatever I'm doing these days.
