civ4 1.74 patch cant login on multiplayer

hi all

as the thread name - i hope - suggests, i am having problems getting this thing to work
was happily playing 1.61 with gamespy thing inside civ4

but now, it refuses to let me get past the login screen
it does the little pause, as i suspect it tries to connect/verify or somethign, but just sits there doing sod all

so went through a number of attempts to get it working .. namely
1. tried new account
2. tried other accounts
3. tried opening up ports on router (as per: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=146735)

NOTE: never had to open up any ports with 1.61

also
windows firewall turned off
no norton but virus thing disabled

ps. i understand there may be a gamespy update also.. but not sure if that is seperate to civ ..
also not sure i have xfire on.. does that matter?

it wasnt broken before, so why update it ?


anybody who may have a fix for this - would instantly bring much joy back to my pitiful existance

Try to play in windowed mode, and see if there is any popup for firewall saying that it wont allow it to connect to internet.

many software firewalls thinks it is a new program when a patch change the executable file, and refuse to allow it to connect to internet (even if it worked before the patch)

but no firewall on my pc at all
tried windowed mode - no joy anyhow

like i say, just put in my user and password in the multiplayer login
and it pauses briefly, and then nuffink..

any other suggestions ?

ps: downloaded a packet sniffer to see if i could tell what in fact was going on

it seems (altho this may be part of the message) to be adding a '-tk' to my username
strange..
maybe i should make a new acc with -tk at the end of it, and then log in without the -tk on there..
ill give it a go

i had this exact problem, and adding civ 4 to my firewall safelist was all that it took to fix mine.

make sure you're not running ANY other antivirus programs.

Thanks for that. It was just the firewall not the Game that was preventing access. Once I allowed acces, it worked. Many thanks for that.

still no luck with getting multiplayer to work
someone surely must have some idea why its not working

its clearly not a firewall problem - as you can see it is in fact communicating with the GS game server or whatver it talks to

Windows XP SP2 comes with a firewall software
