Hi
I have been playing Civ4 for ages. Until recently it was running fine. Now when I get to a certain stage in the game (around about the infantry stage) the game keeps crashing. I get the following error:

Failed to allocate video memory. Please try reducing your graphics setting. file:\civilization4\Gamebryo2_0\CoreLibs\NiDX9Renderer\NiDX9VBManager.cpp, line:1019

Then I get a runtime error.

I have tried lowering the graphics settings to the lowest and it still does it. Once it starts crashing, even if I restart the pc, it still crashes after one or two shots. I have also updated my drivers to see if that would help. But nothing changed.

I am playing BTS, but even if I uninstall everything and reinstall just the Civ4 game with no expansion packs it still does it.

I have a Radeon Yuon 9600 256mb video card, over a gig of ram and 250gb hard drive space.

If I play another game (Doom3 for example) it plays fine with no crashes at all. It only crashes in Civ4.

Can anyone help as Im getting sick of just playing the first half of the game?

Thanks
Kellie

Can anyone please help?

Im really getting withdrawals from this game.

the filepath you quote is weird. Anways the failed to allocate video memory is a problem of some video cards that need more memory than they have and thus need to use the swap file.
How big is the swap file on your machine (it should be set to twice the RAM). Also defragmenting your harddrive might help if the swap file happens to be highly fragmented.

The there are a few graphics settings in the CivilizationIV.ini (basically everything with bink in its name) if you set them to 1 you'll save a bit memory but get ugly graphics. The weird thing is that there is no apparent reason for it to go bad now when you did not change anything in your install.
