I have a 2.1 GHz Power PC with MacOs 10.5.6, 2.5GB DDR2 SDRAM.

The game plays but the animation's slow and turns take a long time to end. The game works for about ten turns, and then the screen goes black and I can hear the disc shutting down. The lights flashes slowly a half dozen times, and the machine's asleep!
Restarting doesn't seem to fix it. However, a few hours later it'll give me the same first few turns without problem.
Does anyone have any idea what's wrong?

Has it ever worked? What graphics card does it have?

You are probably running Civ4 using Rosetta since you don't have an Intel CPU. And you are trying to run it on a ten year old Mac. Is this an iMac, or a tower PowerMac?

Maybe it's overheating? Check if it's full of dust.

Another thought: If you haven't looked already, check the System Preferences: the Screen Saver and the Energy Saver. Perhaps one has been set to too short a time interval and puts the screen or system to sleep. At the same time, check if you have the Hot Corners active in either of those. You might be inadvertently triggering the shut down as you mouse around the game screen.
