Civ4 way better than Civ5 WHARRGARBBBL (A look at Civ3 vs Civ4 complaints)

I still think that civ 3 is better than 4 , but from what i saw in the demo(mine will arrive on 24),civ 5 is better than both4 and 3 ...

A. ciV is not dumbed down.
B. There were complaints that cIV was dumbed down.

They were valid and don't correlate to the complaints about how dumbed-down Civ 5 is compared to ALL past versions of Civ.

Which is why the OP failed in their example. ;)

God I love you and your thread.

I don't get the hate for Civ 3. I found it a wonderful experience. (But then I've enjoyed -every- Civ, having adored it since age of 6)

Plus it had one of the best ways to handle ZoC with opportunity fire, ranged combat AND the way the artillery units were designed was fantastic. Military hardware that could be captured.
Eh, CivIII was by no means a bad game, just a bit underwhelming after seeing the amount of innovation in SMAC and CtP. For me, CivIV was the first civ after CivII that incorporated all the "lessons learned" (and hence impressed me again).

Cheers, LT.

The big letdown was that 2 with Fantastic worlds allowed multiple maps, and this has never been reimplemented :(

OTOH, IV had a lot of really neat features and was an enjoyable game, but a lot of those features really hampered the game balance and made it a fairly clunky game. V, so far, seems to play much cleaner. Sure, it has a few less GOTCHA features, but what's there is pretty well done (minor UI issues aside) and plays smoothly. And the new features introduced are refreshing - I love the minor civ concept, even if they are a little shallow out of the box.

And, to be fair, the only version of Civ I ever found utterly unplayable was CTP - lots of great ideas, terrible game design.

I really liked civ3 but I never wanted to play it on hard setting as the micro was a killer. I tried to play it a few months back in a civ4 lull. Bad idea. Maybe I should try playing civ2 again to see if my second favorite civ is as good as I remember. Haven't playd civ5 yet (demo only) but I'm guessing in a few years I'll reload civ4 and think "Christ! Did I really sink hundreds of hours into this game?". Or maybe I won't

As pointed by others, the complaints posted above were most of the times atleast partly valid ... and some of the ones about civ V are also in that section ( ok , not all, but again not all of the complaints about civ IV were justified ).

I haven't played the full game, but I deeply resent the streamlining of the UI from what I seen so far :p and the concealement of intel that was easily reachable from it in civ IV ( no , not ( only ) the diplo :p Stuff like the hp of a unit, the time needed to heal or the tech progress "bar" inside the city screen ( without it it is far less organic :D to feel the diference that a change of MM ( hiring specs mainly ) has in the tech pace ). that IMHO is a valid complaint and some of those quoted by the OP about civ IV also are in that sector ( like the uberlags, the choppy MP or the lions of doom )

I'd love to know if it's the same people posting?

Could you post the usernames?

@ Rolo

You've picked up on some of my UI worries. Why not tell me how long till my unit heals?!

That does not make me so worried as that ... because there was a similar experience in civ IV, the combat odds calculator. Most of the players of civ IV don't remember than when the game got out, it didn't had a odds calc , just a modified str breakdown of the two units . If they behave like in 2005 , this stuff will get out soon.

But again, that kind of stuff makes some diference and there was no need for taking it out.

Yeah, it had a lot of problems - I mostly liked it for the ideas, but didn't get a lot of actual playtime out of it.

Though I *still* miss public works... *sigh*

Cheers, LT.

After these years, few of those really dislike Civ4 remain active in the forum. Naturally, you should see majority are saying Civ4 is good or the best.

Also, the same process is going to repeat now, you should see many people dislike Civ5 but sooner or latter they will disappear...

Really? To keep SMAC in the picture, every Civ after has been underwhelming to me. Especially 4 which did very weak attempts to mimic the SMAC features and lack of follow-up on ZoC and opportunity fire. From the V demo, similar story.

Of course, I have SMAC so I don't fret too much. Any Civ game that gets finished is followed by a SMAC romp.

Humans are creatures of habit. They get so used to Civ 4 that when Civ V comes around all a lot of them can do is whine about how its so much different than their beloved Civ 4 that they have been playing for years. :(

Its the same with every new release....

I remember when Civ III came out & some people were whining about how now they had to have resources to build units!! Hahah! Never changes....

I predict the same thing will happen when Civ VI will come out. And it will be even more devastating and loud because more brainless morons will have good computers and internet connection. I am sorry to say this, but such emotional complaining is stupid. If you don't like it - it's your personal problem. Do not make it "the end of the world" or something like that. Find a game which you like and play it. Do not touch this new game if you don't like it. It really can't be simplier than that.

If it's just about being resistant to change then why do so many people like anything that's new and automatically think it's better because it's the new and therefore inevitably better version?

This works both ways.

The real "brainless morons" are the people who can't accept that different people like different things and some people like some changes and dislike others.

Some people just mindlessly like whatever is new. Blinded by the shine.

Works both ways.

Well yes, everytime something new comes out, there are issues. But sometimes that might actually mean the new version or product has actual issues. There were no complaints when the second Ratchet & Clank game came out. Or when every Gran Turismo game comes out. Simplistic comparisons, of course, but you get my point. Sometimes it's important to hear those out. Clearly people are concerned about a beautiful series being watered down. Has it actually happened? Maybe not. But that doesn't mean people don't have the right to complain!
