Hi,

I gave civ 5 a miss, was massively put off by the state of the game on release. But I still play Civ 4 BTS with a lot of mods. How does this new game in terms of gameplay compare to the best mods from civ 4? Wondering if its worth shelling out the cash for this game or just stick to civ4:bts mods.

Please advise!
Thanks

BE still needs work. It's not the catastophe that Civ 5 was immediately on release, but it's not as good as Civ V with expansion I would recommend that you wait for a price drop, another major patch, and a maybe an expansion.
In the meantime you should check out Civ V complete. Gods and Kings and Brave New World have improved the game a great deal.

Thanks. Maybe I'll have a look at civ 5.
So Civ 4 : BTS with a good mod has more content and more enjoyable than beyond Earth?

Depends what you find enjoyable. Beyond Earth has the sci-fi setting that most Civilisation games (and mods) tends to lack (even the more comprehensive CiV mods don't often have that future setting down right), but of course Civ 4 as an older game with an established modding scene will have a lot more mod content out.

Both CiV and Beyond Earth have Steam Workshop support and a number of quality mods, though.

I think is a huge mistake to compare civ4BTS with CivBE. Civ4BTS is an older game that is fully complete with expansion packs and a ton of quality mods. CivBE is a good game but also a newer game, not as mature yet. It needs time to develop.

Also, CivBE is based on the civ5 engine which made some big changes from civ4, notably hexes and 1upt. If you love civ4 stacks and despise 1upt, you will most likely hate civBE.

I would recommend playing civ5. If you are ok with the big changes between civ4 and civ5, then you should be ok with civBE. But if you are a super traditionalist civ player who thinks civ4 is king forever and 1upt is blasphemy then you will most likely never like civBE no matter what. And in that case, I would say, don't bother with civBE.

If you didn't buy CIV5 then there is no reason to get CIV:BE, because it is the same engine and (more or less) the same game concept.

If you want to try the CIV5-style gameplay (hexes, hapiness and all that stuff) I'd recommend you to buy CIV5 complete - you will get a lot more for your buck than from CIV:BE. If you want a SciFi setting stick to CIV4 mods or buy SMAC.

Im downloading it at the moment. Thanks for the advice everyone. Decided that perhaps it is time to upgrade from civ 4! Even though it may not have all the content, different planets is appealing!

I think ill stick to my guns and give civ 5 a miss, civ4:bts was too good and Civ BE looks refreshing

I think your missing out a LOT not playing Civ 5. As a lifetime Civ fan I have gotten tons of game play enjoyment from Civ 5 with all of the expansions. Civ BE is fun, but so small compared to Civ V.

Civ BE in its current state is much worse than Civ V is. Neither are comparable to Civ IV. There's still some enjoyment to be had, but I still ended up going back to Civ IV pretty quickly after playing BE.

I prefer CiV BE to BNW CiV 5, i bought it because everybody and their mother is praising it while pissing at BE... played 46 hours for a week, and had to go back to CiVBE. I am just more enthusiastic about science fiction than historic fiction, and i also prefer the military aspects of the game more.

To each their own.

Civ IV BTS is IMO better than CiV BNW. Haven't even bothered playing CivBE, from what I'm seeing on the forums it simply isn't worth my money.

Indeed. As a fan of the series since Civ III, though, I have found myself going back to Civ IV BTS a lot recently but haven't played BNW in about a year and a half. I think BTS simply has more strategic depth, though I really like(d) Civ V as well. I can also LAN Civ IV with my brother which I can't with V because we share the same steam account.

If BE goes down to $20 or lower I might pick it up, otherwise I'm staying away.

I found it to be excellent! Better than Civ4BTS with mods! It looks stunning and has a really good background and feel to it.

It has so much potential with mods to be absolutely insane!

I agree that G&K made Civ V better but, I think that BNW was a bit of a mixed bag. The additional civs in BNW where good but, some of the new game systems in BNW where annoying and regressive IMO.

The nice thing about CivBE is that they cherry picked some of the best things from Civ V and it's expansion to make a leaner, meaner and, more streamlined version of Civ V. Now there is certainly some things to be disappointed about CivBE but, I find that the SciFi setting along with, tech web and, other gameplay features make CivBE a refreshing change from Civ V.

Thanks. Maybe I'll have a look at civ 5.

CIV IV BTS is definitely better than BE.

I'd recommend trying Civ V. Diplomacy in BE is horrible and it's marginally better in V. You will notice quite a drop off in that department from IV. That being said, overall I've enjoyed V about as much as IV. If V had IV's diplomacy, it would be the best in the series.

Now I did enjoy V but BE just didn't do if for me. Part of it is the space/sci fi setting but mostly it's the lack of polish.

So to summarize, I'd pick up V with the expansions before paying for BE.
