If Civ 5 - 6 'rigid' tag class and promotion class system is a historical 'no do'.
What should unit categorizations be? so to be most historical accurate YET remains playable ... optimum point in Historical Accuracy VS Playability spectrum.
Since rigid class rule in Civ6 is soreley oversimplifications, too rigid and leads to midgame 'lame game'. and ignores unit evolution paths... As @Boris Gudenuf pointed out which he concluded 'Civ6 modding is waste of effort no matter how hard he tries) biggest examples are
Classical Era
- Infantry unit organizations. the likes of Picts did add swordsmen to supplement spearmen in the same column.
- Roman Legion through the years. from the first use of swordsmen to the End of Empire.
What we see is there still separate 'spearmen' and 'swordsmen' unit AND Legion being Swordsmen replacements. this ignores that one cohort (one tile) is a mixed 'sword and spear' unit.
Earlymodern
- Musketeer (or arquebusier) as homogeneous unit.
Historically this case is rare, this situation happens unintentionally, because musketeers are temporarily detached to hold ground or to man a strongpoint either being built (Wooden Palisades in Battle of Nagashino) or captured. OR Pikemen and Musketeers are organized as different column and combined later in the battlefield. what happened at Sarhu is mis-planned. Ming - Joseon actually planned to deploy Pike and Shot infantry there but Musketeers and Pikemen came from different city and marched as different column and not one tercio.
- Crossbowman successor is Field Cannon.
In truth Crossbowman (as well as refined archers) become 'Shotte' element of 'Pike and Shotte' infantry. or at least Arquebusiers in case of stacking rule.
Modern Era
- Machinegun, Antitank and Antiair as homogeneous unit
They never were. the biggest of such unit is at 'Battery' (Company) level
- Drones
Again. they're ancillaries rather than a full unit.

Navy
- Missile ships.
These, no matter how big or small. are successors to ALL kind of previous surface ships regardless how difference these predecessors are. when guided missile warfare comes to be. they're converged with very marginal differernces
Who disagree?

-------more to come--------

Interesting, we could merge different kinds of units. But within which limit ?

Think each unit as a function. You shouldn't send a AA unit alone, except you can. AT and machineguns are the same. If any, they should automatically lose against any opponent without casualties for it except if it's their counter. (the other way around ?) Thing is map is fastly clustered and certainly cannot represent such a variety of units. Mergings ? Fractal hexs ?

I'm mentioned Battle of Sarhu. this battle is very important to Korean History and there's more on Korean flicks than ANY Sinophonic ones.
