CivChess Project

any news on the use of ethnic artstyles for black and white?
I couldnt make it work at all, last time i tried.

ArtStyles are pretty easy. Its just one file. Download v0.500 from the OP, it has the artstyles implemented.

Uploaded and linked v0.500 in the opening post. It has a simple AI implemented, new main menu background, a Chess Set for each Era, and the move/attack highlighting of plots.

I am planning the next version for next weekend and am going to revamp and code in the victory conditions and smarten up the AI a bit.

What do you mean by a Chess set for each Era?

and also, check this out. I see Persia, Egypt, Greece, Germany, Viking and Spanish on the first page. England/Celts, Japan, China (Lotus, i think would be appropriate), and India on the second page.

I can't run the mod. I'm running BtS 3.13 and CivChess 0.3 Beta. When the game is loading, on 'Init XML' stage it starts to bring numerous errors like this:
Tag:ERA_[RENAISSANCE, CLASSICAL, etc.] in Info class was incorrect.
Current XML file is: xml\Technologies/CIV4TechInfos.xml

EDIT: Switched to 0.5 and all is working fine. But AI is stupid, it moves only if it can attack my units, and I captured the king very easily. Anyway, I like the idea of CivChess. Good luck with your project, Jeckel!

Seeing as how Sakhr is doing that fantastic-looking set of staunton, would it be worth having a squiz at some of those other sets? I'm currently half way through the meshes, having completed the king, queen and pawn. Not any huge amount of work. My stuff looks to be much lower poly than sakhr's (my highest is about 700, most are 4-500), but with only 64 squares and 32 units, i'm not sure that's really a problem :). Worth continuing, or move on?

moopo , i suggest you keep making them since you are close to finish, this sets from your link is easy to model and wont take time

Yes, continue, I am planning to use them as the default Chess Set. :goodjob:

ok :). I'll have to pass on those models though Sakhr, as they're a different type of set :)

In that case, can anyone blender-proficient suggest a way I make the gap in the Bishop's hat thing? I first tried adding an icosphere, streching it, subdividing some of the faces and the just deleting them off. This made the gap look very dodgy. I'm about to try the same thing with a UVsphere, which should be much neater, but I don't know how to create the faces on the inside, if you get what i mean.

That's my queen, in blender. feedback please? As I said much earlier, these are my first meaningful attempts at units for the game, and it's also my first time helping out in a mod :) so any and all feedback would be great

PS Is so many people listen to rap, NikNak, then why do get paid out for it so often? :) I reckon you've got those figures the wrong way around

good work Moopoo really.
maybe the center of this piece can be less large
i use Blender only for unwrap so i cant really help

Good, but there are no chess maps in v. 0.500 and I think it's a bit weird to play chess on a Continent or Archipelago map...

I've take a look there and there are no scenarios. I'm playing 0.500, not 0.300.

I looked in the zip file I uploaded for v0.500 and the CivChess mapscript is in the same directory it was in for v0.300, but regardless, v0.500 is not ment to really be playable, its just to show what the movement highlighting looks like and the different Chess Set civs.

Jeckel, just out of curiosity, how in the world are you going to teach this AI how to play standard chess? It seems like that would be quite a challenge!

Well, it isn't going to be easy, but I found a chess engine written in python and I am going to rewrite that code into Civ4 python. First I'm going to polish how it know what the board's current states are, then I'm going to move to acually rewriting the chess engine.

Just an update so yall don't think I've forgotten this.

Due to work and other RL stuff I've been a little bit busyer then I planned and haven't had much time for coding. I have most of the basic Victory conditions working, but haven't started polishing them.

I am working on this whenever I get an extra hour or two at home, the going is slow. It will probly be another week or two before I release another version, but it is coming. :band:
