This was a request from WINTER, so I tried to see if I could build it. Luckily the geometry was very simple.

Looks good, The Civil War Ironclad Collection would be compleated after this unit is releaced :D.

Not really... There were more Monitors built, but nobody really tried to recreate the Virginia. In spite of the old arguments about the battle at Hampton Roads being a stalemate, the Virginia was pretty heavily damaged in the fight.

In fact, the Virginia was more effective as a terror tactic after that battle... it never actually fought again, at least not in a major engagement, but it was very useful to scare the hell out of Union captains plying the waters of the southern James and Chesapeake.

Considering how well it did against the blockade squadron.... :mischief: :p ;)

That might be because they blew it up themselfs after the battle with the moniter. :p :D

OH BTW, I was more refering to the Iron plating(actually might want to call it rail road plating :p) when I said revolutionary.;)

Well it did do very well against the wooden ships around Fort Monroe... but it couldn't match up to the Monitor. The Monitor was simply a stronger ship, and especially since it was built from scratch rather than modified from a wooden-hull ship.

That is something of an oversimplification. They did indeed destroy it themselves, but they didn't do it until several weeks later when it was apparent Norfolk could not be held. It was indeed used to terrorize the boats in the area up until that point, but it was more of a bluff than anything else. In fact, the U.S. military did not consider the James River "opened" to further traffic until the Virginia had been destroyed in spite of the fact that it had barely emerged from its lair since Hampton Roads.

The Monitor and Virginia were not the first ironclads ever built. Actually the first ironclads were built by the French, and then the British launched what was arguably the most powerful ironclad of the day, the HMS Warrior. But I understand what you mean.

I've posted some pictures that I took on my vacation of models of the famed ship before and after its conversion. For those who don't know, the CSS Virginia was built from the salvaged remains of the USS Merrimac which was a wooden vessel.

Here is the Merrimac before it was converted:

And here it is after it was renamed the Virginia

Hard to believe it's the same boat!!

Yeah I know about those two. ;)

The Monitor was not able to severly damage the Virginia, and visa versa. After about a few hours af fighting both withdrawed

Those Ironclads were very different in conception though...

Yeah those ships were Iron clads not Iron ships. Hmm, almost time to start getting ready to watch Macross Plus. :mischief:

Well............. The ships were able to make each others hearing go bye bye.

That's not really true. Comparably, the Monitor did a lot more damage to the Virginia than vise versa. The Confederate ship had to go back to Norfolk for a good deal of repairs.

Actually, the Civil War Ironclad Collection isn't Complete, but the two most famous ones are done. If I recall correctly the Union tried variations on the Monitor class with two and even three turrets. I don't remember any specifics but I think a three turreted one was used in an attack on Charleston, SC, and got shelled into oblivion.

No the collection is not nearly complete... there were several different classes of ironclads on both sides. But Wyrmshadow's Monitor and Virginia are nonetheless two much-needed additions.

Not to mention the Union gunboats on the Mississippi some of which were ironclads. Man, I'd love to have those for my scenario.

Yes! River Gunboats. Its something I've been secretly wanting for ages. Another Cool thing would be a civilian Paddle wheel steamer that would open up with small arms fire from all over the ship for attack. It could be a transport...
