Recently there was this homebrew hack for the Playstation Portable(PSP) that lets it play any Playstation 1 game. I've never particularly cared about the PSP until now, and I've heard about the PS1 version of Civ2 before, so you know where this is going. :D

Well, anyway, I still have to hunt a PSP down that can be hacked for that, but about the Playstation version - is it anything like the PC version, or really limited like the SNES version of Civilization 1 was? Think it's worth getting a PSP jsut for the opportunity to play Civilization on a handheld?

Graphics are pretty muddy, making text hard to read. The gameplay though is easier as a whole. Overall I found it pretty enjoyable. I am not sure that buying a PSP just for one game is worth it though.

Ah, well it's not just one game of course, since the PSP can now emulate the entire PS1 library. But I'll look for it anyway since the idea of a portable Civ is just too hard to resist. It'd be nice if they could make a DS remake of a Civ game though...the stylus and touchscreen has potential, and there's already a Simcity DS game in the works.

Well, the PSP can also emulate NES, SNES, SEGA GEN/SAT/MASTER, etc...So if you are into lots of retro games it would be a good buy.

i have civ2 for the psx and i used a homebrew program (Dr.POP) with the custom firmware 3.03 OE-B and extracted an .iso from civ2 compressed it and played it on my psp, its pretty good

Finally got a PSP and Civ2 working now. :) It's great, portable Civilization 2! Took me a while to get used to the two save slots only, but there's a way to get around it using this plugin called CWCHEAT, which lets you back-up the memory cards so you can save multiple times.

My only beef with this version is the lack of an Earth map. And the ISO size too, at around 500mb. SG-17, what do you use to compress it to make it smaller?

If you're going to get a PSP and you want to use homebrew, you have to make sure that you get 1.00 or 1.50 firmware. Most new PSP's you get have 2.17 firmware. Try looking on ebay for the right firmware.

and upgrade to the custom firmware 3.03 OE-C which has all of the freatures of the official 3.03, all of the homebrew capabilities of 1.50 and the ability to play ripped psx games without a ps3
