Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword Expansion Pack Announced!

Random events sure sound nice! :D

I was really missing that out in vanilla. But, I still haven't played Warlords, perhaps it's time go get it.

I hope it's actually worth 30 bucks this time, or they have the common sense to price it appropriately... unlike Warlords, which I waited until last week to buy because of the initial...and unnecessary... high price.

And I hope it doesn't require yet another patch...and resultant wait for the patch...to work right.

...for that matter, I hope it includes the patch for Warlords itself. Which some of us in the world of dial-up still don't have.

This expansion sounds like it will be worth the money, but I must confess, it caught me off guard. I wasn't expecting an expansion pack at all, what a cool surprise!!:D

the new wonders dont impress me much...where's the Sphinx, CN Tower, Sydney Opera House, etc.?

also, which civ will Sitting Bull be in? Plus, he wasnt even a ruler!

Great News!!!!! :woohoo:

I'm very intrigued by the addition of corporations. Wondering if they will work somewhat like the religious shrines.....

Here's hoping the expansion can liven up the industrial/modern ages. Usually for me, that's when the game starts to get tedious.

Alright, let the speculation begin.

Having gone over the CIVIII civilizations, there are eight not currently accounted for in CIVIV, including the Babylonians, Portugese, and Netherlands. It seems that the Sioux will make an appearance here, which adds a ninth, assuming that the other missing ones are also included: Iroquis, Phonetians, Maya, Sumarians, and Byzantines.

So, any guesses on the tenth party? The mention of Charlamagne makes me think that perhaps it might be the Holy Roman Empire, but I don't really think that they're significant enough to warrent inclusion. I'd personally like another southeast Asian or central African civ.

I'm guessing Charlamagne is part of a scenario so the HRE probably won't be in the epic game.

What kind of name is "Beyond the Sword" anyway? Of course it is not as weird as Play the World...
I hope Beyond the Sword means that the scenarios and the overall expansion will focus less on warfare and more on the finer aspects of civilisation (such as backstabbing).

Uhh?

Beyond the Sword, i.e. stuff other than warfare?

This sounds very hopeful. Warlords was okay, but the new game editions didn't make that much difference and the scenarios included were worse then ones being made here.
This expansion pack feels like it might get two groups of followers, some who love the extra stuff and some who wish it would go back to normal. I just hope stuff can be turned on and off easily so you don't have to play with the new features you can't stand.
I bet corporations are like late-game religions. In the normal game after everyone has free religion to be religious is sort of pointless.
I wonder what fan-made content they'll have?

Why would they declare from march if it's still in july??

Anyway I'm also concerned about whether it'll include the vassal option or not...

Judging by the time it took for them to release Warlords, I figured we were due for the second expansion some time soon. The recent rumors only confirmed my suspicions.

My only fear though, is that they don't bite off more than they can chew. Warlords, by all accounts, was a tiny expansion and even then it needed a patch to be close to playable. This feature list is huge, and I hope they give themselves the necessary time to do the civ series justice.

As far as the features themselves go, I'm excited. It seems to be everything that has been asked for post-warlords. It might be too much to ask, but here's hoping they tighten up the code base. It would be nice to go against the trend of expansion always equally bloat.

I don't mind the 1 expansion per year release schedule, but I want them not just done, but done right.

This looks like a very rushed expansion. One view on the CFC news shows the following:

1. Late last month Take Two mentioned in a press release that starting in fiscal 2008 (which begins Nov. 1 2007), 2K Games will have new content based on the Civilization franchise.

2. Facing shareholder revolt, Take Two Interactive today announced it has postponed its annual shareholder meeting scheduled for March 23, 2007 until March 29, 2007, and that it's considering new corporate strategies, including the sale of the company.

3. Now the new expansion will suddenly be available in July 2007!

After all, this expansion doesn´t look very well planned and well tested to me.
No words about game performance, no words about an editor ….

Remember Warlords came out in July 2006, so if Firaxis began working on Beyond the Sword right after that, it would still be full year of work by July 2007.

Warlords, on the other hand, came out only 9 months after Civ4.

Not sure about the editor... I do hope it's included, to make it easier for fans to mod.

I doubt it... Warlords is a decent expansion pack, unlike PTW which received mostly very bad reviews.

I doubt that they would not include Warlords with BTS because they would then need to iron out the glitches for both Vanilla+Warlords+BTS and Vanilla+BTS. This would seriously cut into whatever profits they managed to gain by convincing some people to finally buy Warlords. Also, they've only been given a year to develop this and I doubt they have time to also work out the bugs for Vanilla+BTS.

Anyway, I don't really like the new wonders very much. Shwedagon Paya? Maybe I should just call it Dragon Pie?

Who are the "select members of the Civ Fan Community"?
Does this mean new scenarios, or a rehash of the work we see here by various contributors?

It means Firaxis recruited some modders from the modding community to make additional new content for the expansion. :)
