Hi,
me and my friend started a civ4 multiplayer game in version 1.52, 2 days ago.
We didn't set a password for our civilizations and everytime, when a password was requested by the computer, you could continue the game without entering a password. Today, we tried to resume our game, but all of a sudden there is a password needed... I can't remember that i have set one at any time :/

Maybe someone has similar experiences and knows a solution.
Our save file: http://www27.brinkster.com/dan9287/bstd1.rar
(( it is not attached here, because it is larger than 500kb ))

I had the exect same problem today and i got my password back!
its a bit complicated, so just give me the save file and ill give you the password. for some reason, i cant download from the link you gave, so send the save file to Daniel_Yahi@yahoo.com (its an underline, not a space) and ill send you back the password.

I have the same problem as volc05 though i had a password before but now the game is not accepting it.

roadkill15: Do u think u can help me too? I hav sent u my savefile my email is carlpersson@hotmail.com

I've stumbled upon a work around for this problem, I believe.
Only done it once when mine and a friends game came up with this stupid problem. So this isn't tested or gauranteed to work at all.

Start up the saved game, and only you (the person hosting) join the game. Choose one of the computer civs and launch the game.
Once the game starts a box should come up and ask you to vote because players are missing. Choose to save and continue playing. That will replace your original players civs with computer civs. Once you can actually play the game, save it again and quit out.
Now start a new game with that newest saved file, all the original civs are computer civs and don't need passwords to play. Have everyone join and choose their original civs. You'll get a popup box again asking you to vote about a missing player. Choose to save and continue playing. That missing player is the computer civ you took over, so they'll just go back to being a computer civ.

You don't miss out on a full turn, but a computer civ can mess up your civilization some. When the computer took over my friends civilization they broke several open borders and deals he had with other civilizations. Usually not a huge issue, but it could be.

Hope this helps and works for most of you!

Nice! works with the save file i tried! im sure it will help most ppl (those who have a slot that they can get into the game with). but if the person who have this problem didnt put any password originaly, he sould try this password first - d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e .
if the person ented some password originaly, but doesnt have any slots he can get in the game with , go to this thread - http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=3526353.

I was able to get in as one of the computer players and then save the game, which effectively removed the original human players. Selected Save and Continue from the next menu and that worked as well. This basically had the consequence of moving forward a turn and renaming the computer Civ to my name (There were now two Civs named Stargrove). I then exited to the Main Menu, reselected Multiplayer and then loaded the VOTE Savegame I just created. I was able to get back in as myself.

I tried two different things after making multiple copies of this new saved game file, both with the same result:
1) When the game asked for a password I did not enter one and hit OK. I got into the game and everything looked fine. Except for the loss of one turn. Saved the game normally and went back to Main Menu. Reloaded the game again and when it asked me for a password, I just hit OK. It said I entered the wrong password.

2) When the game asked for a password I carefully entered one and hit OK. I got into the game and everything looked fine. Except for the loss of one turn. Saved the game normally and went back to Main Menu. Reloaded the game again and when it asked me for a password, I carefully reentered the one I entered earlier and hit OK. It said I entered the wrong password.

So, while this gets you back in, it may mess your game, and you will lose some turns in the process. It would also seem that, at least in my case, I will have to go through these steps everytime we do a final save for the night.

On another note, I did some more incestigation into my password problem. It would seem that Civ Autosaves on all of the computers that are playing. When my friends and I play two of them come over to my place and one is in Chicago. I found a copy of the first save (4000BC) on another computer I have here in my basement. Looking at that save file I can see that at least three of us did not use passwords because I see the string associated with a blank password inthe save file (d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e). So it would seem that the problem crops up later during the save process. Later Autosaves have the bad passwords in them. I don't know what implecations this has, but I believe it is worth noting. Hopefully Firaxis is paying attention to these threads.

"So it would seem that the problem crops up later during the save process. Later Autosaves have the bad passwords in them." (Stargrove)
I think he is right, because i tought that i had the upgrade problem, although i was so sure at that time that i started the save in 1.52. The best way to keep this bug from affecting our game, is to leave a blank password, and later, when the game asks for a password, put the hash password - d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e (you can even save it in a txt file and Ctrl+c-Ctrl+v it to the game. fast and effortless).
