I posted it on the thunderfall's topic, but since it seems that noone pays it attention, I think that it would be better if I tried with a topic of its own.
Lo and behold, mortals, for you are on the presence of the
Tartessian civilization
A misterious civilization linked to Atlantis if we believe the Greek historicians, unlike Atlantis there were several proofs of its existance. Even if the city of Tartessos itself was never found, its vast cultural influence could be found in many surrounding civs and in the many complex jewerly and metal craftings that surrounds the zone. Traders and artists, the Tartessians commerced with cooper and tin with the phoenicians and Greeks, and created a vast commercial net over the Mediterranean sea. However, it misteriously dissappeared 6 centuries before Christ was born, some say that due to Carthage, another ones says that the Guadalquivir river ended up flooding the city (and thus the Atlantis myth was born). An ancient civilization surrounded by truth and myth, the Tartessian civilization was one of the most fascinant civs that populated the mediterranean sea.
Cities: Tartessos, (Atlantis?
) Carpia, Celtica, Conii, Gades, Algarve, Alentejo
Leader: King Arganthonios
Commercial, philosophical
Starting techs:
Minning, fishing
AI personality: Tartessian kings were famous for being traders yet very generous. They also didn't took part in many conflicts, so I think that a peaceful or trading like AI a la Ghandi or Kansa Musa would fit him.
Aspect: Very little is known about him, but a Gilgamesh / Hammurabi modification would be enough, me thinks.
Flag: I dunno, but the most iconic symbol of the Tartessians were this bronzework.
Unique building:
Bronzecrafting guild
Replaces forge
Added effect: Every traderoute generates +2
Unique unit:
Tartessian trading boat
Replaces: Fishing boat
Same as a regular boat, the tartessian trading boat has one additional movement, making it a versatile exploration unit.
From a game balance perspective, the tartessian civilization is bound to be a cultural powerhouse! Their unique building is great for culture building, and it makes their cultural expansion to be heavily tied to traderoutes and therefore sea cities will have an advantage (just as it happened on the real life). The Artemis temple + broncecrafting guild combination is a match made in heaven!
However, that is compensated by a really weak UU: it is not only a naval one, but also a non combatant one! Unless you start the game on a coast, it became basically uselss, although it is nice to being able to quickly send fishing boats from your capital to your remote colonies.
I don't know if Arganthonios's traits are exactly balanced. The UB is already quite powerful, and while the Tartessian civilization must be commercial, the philosophical trait might be too much of a good trait in combination with an already powerful culturebombing building. Expansive or creative could be a good replacement for that trait in the case that Tartessos ends up being unbalanced.
Can someone make this into a proper civ, pretty please? I love the Tartessian civ, they are the closest thing to an Atlantis - like civilization that have ever existed
