Civilization V Announced!

goodie huts should be removed and each civ should start the game with 50 golds instead. it is a very randomizing factor. players shouldn't make their strategies according to their hopes on free techs from goodie huts. i know many guys reload many times to have a free tech from them. if u move on them on the same turn, you get the same result. but if u waste 1 turn and move on it 1 turn later, you get another option and free tech, maybe this time. well, it is just stupid.

See, I just take what the huts give me and deal with it, I hate reloading unless I loose a great general to the bad combat system

That and if my enemy gets a wonder 1 turn before me. Most probably disagree with me on this one but I can't deal with it, I just go into berserk rage when it happens...

Gentlemen, the correct thing to do when an enemy beats you to a wonder by one turn is to have a large number of military units outside the city that built it in short order.

And then burn everything that doesn't have a wonder.

The SMAC system of 'X is about to complete Project Y' + the ability to hurry production then worked pretty well for single player.

Wow! Just making my way back from a brief hiatus to CIV and Civfanatics, only to discover CIV V is on its way. Cool beans...

Yeah, that was perfect. Oh what a great game. This forum really lacks a part for that game.

Once I used to feel the same thing. Then I just did let that feeling go. How? Because I don't build wonders any more

Not only for my style but also speaking generally, unless you will adopt a wonder economy, there is no need for building wonders. especially on high levels, it is a dangerous waste of hammers.
Well, i used to build the great wall in most of my games. But now, i don't build it unless i pick an IMP or PRO leader who benefit it really. Fogbusting seems much more practical.

Look around a little more. There is a section dedicated to SMAC.

Does anyone have any links to some articles that contain a little bit more specific info? I found an article in some russian magazine. There is some 6 pages about civ5. It's the most detailed I've seen so far.

Yes, seems, that nobody here is able to set up a info thread...

Short copy from the first post in the german overview thread:

The firaxis civ5 page has plenty of articles about Civ5 linked. Nearly every article contains the same info. Other official information is (besides the trailer) not available, there are some rumors from a danish magazin, and some info from the german "Computer Bild Spiele", which can be found somewhere in the forum (...i guess, i should maybe just copy everything...).

Still don't see anything that says something more detailed. I might post some of that article, but I have to translate it first. I think it has more detailed info.

At the civilization 5 homepage (needs Javascript enabled and Flash Player installed), you can find under "information" the point "features".
Besides quotes from game magazins (the danish...forgot the name, the british GamePro, the german Computer Bild Spiele), this is the only available information.

Here is a part from that russian gaming magazine (I don't have a life you see...).
It's as straight of translation as i could do. Everything is as it was in that magazine, didn't change anything, didn't add anything, just translated. It's as close to original as it can be. Skipped some of irrelevant text. I wouldn't want to believe some stuff said in it though. I don't find gaming magazines very trustworthy.

""...In fifth part of CIV squares are replaced with hexagons. By using hexes the game world will look more natural with new map generator that accurately merges climate zone borderlines. Aside from that hexes will provide lots of new tactic possibilities, considerably making warfare harder. We will have to carefully plan advancements of military units into enemy territory expecting counter strikes from different directions.

No more stacking. It’s quite strict now: one hex – one unit, no more (although one worker unit can stand in the same hex with one military unit and one special unit). Firaxis are adding ranged bombardment – archers can bombard 2 tiles distance like catapults or artillery, resulting in new, scary warfare system. We will have to organize solid fronts across the map, moving mobile groups of artillery to provide support and keep enemies away from cities – there is only one unit now.

Strategic aviation has a bigger role, capable of supporting units from a distance. Basically the beloved hillbilly tactic “to build shitloads of tanks and to hell with it” is gone. Think, prepare, develop all unit categories including the fleet (ships are capable of bombarding coastlines). Firaxis are threatening to redo the naval warfare, but how exactly is unknown.
One more thing regarding warfare – it does not allow the famous “warrior attacking marine” situations. Units with guns will shoot down a bunch of clubmen with no mercy before they even reach them.

Not a fact that we will want to go into war in the first place however. Firaxis radically changed the diplomatic system. AI will react more actively towards aggressive nations. Start a couple of wars and you’ll find that a coalition of nations have united against you. While being the local Hitler (or Stalin) is fun, it’s quite hard. It’s much easier to make agreements of conjoint research with neighbours - in perspective technological cooperation brings more bonuses than direct occupation of neighbouring country. One more pleasant feature is city states (think of ancient Greece), trying to survive next to insane superpowers. If you wish you can conquer some independent Danzig or Krakow and gain another city to your empire. But it’s way more interesting to make partnership treaties with little-ones – which will gain you another source of gold and tech in exchange for protection. Again you’ll gain more from this kind of diplomatic play than from occupation.

Territorial system is also changed – borders grow slowly and don’t depend on culture (you can accelerate their growth by investing gold in state expansion, but gold is as always short). So you have to carefully plan where to place your new city, taking into account if valuable resources will be in their line of influence (or if the enemy gets them first). AI will act accordingly – our AI buddies now have a variety of predetermined strategies. If they see that there is a lot of free rich land they’ll start to expand like crazy. If they see that everything is taken, they’ll concentrate on developing their empire. Science is concentrated in cities – certain groups of populations will add points towards research, you can no longer buy research with gold. So if like communists you decide to send all your intellectuals to gulag, technological development of your country will stop.

System of social politics looks distantly similar to <”?tree of talents?”> from “World of Warcraft” or doctrine from “company of Heroes”. Peaceful citizens, concentrated on building opera houses and training balalaika bands will sufficiently outrun the “always at war” empires in domestic establishment.
To balance the complexity of social politics, religions are removed completely, stripping the progressive society of a pleasant possibility to declare jihad on Switzerland.

Producers promise that leaders will act more lifelike. Also all Emperors, presidents and Kaisers will act accordingly to their real life equivalent. You can expect aggressiveness from Hitler and peaceful development from Gandhi. Also characteristics of leaders will change a bit in the beginning of every new game so they wouldn’t be too predictable.

Much attention is made to custom mods – in game browser, allowing to check out and download mods without leaving the game. You can also visit fan sites and have arguments with some Texas farmers while not distracting from building your fourth Reich.""

A) What the the hell makes everyone think people in Texas are a bunch of hick farmers
B) This seems to alude to the possibility of Hitler as a leader
C)I do like the mentioned change about warrior d. marine situations. I had far to many longbow d. tank situations in Civ IV for my liking
D) I also like that ingame browser idea for mods, and hope they expand that to patches cause Civ IV's ingame patch system sucked hardcore

I do realize that at the moment nothing is true until we hear from 2K of Firaxis, but some of these things do look promising

Edit: You guys might also want to check the front page for what I assume are some confirmed updates.

There's many things I don't like, as I alluded to in the other thread Ginger Ale posted about the game magazines. Of course, it isn't set in stone until Firaxis confirms it, so we don't really know anything yet.

Agreed. I'm rather dissapointed about religions because I do feel that they have played a vital role in history.
Good to see that they are bringing back some of the usual leaders and some new ones for old civs.
The 3 tiles around a city to be worked also is promising because it now allows for more realistic growth.
I'm already starting to plan up battle lines around my cities so that even if someone does get to my doorstep, they'll be a walking corpse.
The diplomacy also lookes promising, no more caveman spain asking me for fission every other turn like in Civ IV.
All and all, I like what I see, now I just have to wait and see what 2K, Firaxis, or Sid himself confirm.
