CivilizationIV.ini file periodically resets itself to defaults

I can't figure out any pattern, but on occasion the CivilizationIV.ini file changes some settings back to their default values after I have edited them with a text editor.

In particular, any movies in BtS result in a CTD on my machine. To avoid this, I have to edit CivilizationIV.ini and turn off the Intro movie, and in my profile I turn off Wonder movies.

Approximately once every 15 or so loads of BtS, but without any truly regular pattern, I notice the following:
* Game CTDs on initial load, before doing anything. Inspecting the CivilizationIV.ini file shows that it has mysteriously been modified to enable the Intro movie again.
* After editing the CivilizationIV.ini file again, the default profile has been changed back to "Default Profile" instead of "Sam", so I have to select my profile as the default again.

Hopefully this will be obsolete with the patch; I have noticed no regular pattern in when this occurs, so it is hard to pin down.

I agree with you.
Same trouble. I have edited my .ini file for having a default set of options on/off and it is overwritten from time to time..
I have since set my ini file with a "read only" flag, and up till now it works...

I noticed my settings changing too. Luckily just an annoyance and no CTD's. Warlords would do the same thing. What I did to stop the problem was edit CivilizationIV.ini and then make a copy of it to replace CivilizationIV.ini.bak in the same folder.

Basically leaving me with CivilizationIV.ini and CivilizationIV.ini.bak as exact copies of each other.

I had the same problem when I was using a, let's say, modified game exe. Since I'm using the original exe again, everything is fine.

I use a downloaded steam version for BTS. No "modified exe" for BTS (other than modified by/for Steam).
McLMan tip is interresting.

Try right-clicking on the .ini file, selecting Properties and checking the box next to Read-only. That should prevent anything from changing it.

This just happened to me for the first time, after updating my ATI drivers...

In fact, I think part of my CivilizationIV.ini was chopped off!

Could anyone with 3.17 please post CivilizationIV.ini so I can check?

Problem solved!

The file was definitely corrupted, I deleted it and started the game, a new one appeared :)
