Please forgive the weak joke in the title.

I just had an enemy scout deal 24 damage to my great war bomber, which is obviously shockingly high for a unit with 6 combat strength. I was playing as Polynesia, and the scout was Mayan. The bomber had 2 ranks of ground bombardment, and I don't know what promotions the scout had, since it died in the attack.

And this just occurred to me: I have no idea how the Mayans even acquired a scout in the year 1854 (turn 294 on normal). It is possible that the scout survived since the ancient era, but that would take AI unit preservation to a whole new level.

Was there interception in the area? Perhaps that was the cause of the damage.

I think that there is something going on with the AI purchase algorythms. The AI I was playing last night bought about 10 scouts once it had run out of reserve money. Possibly in the gold spending program or something.

Probably needs to be fixed.

As far as the Scout and the bomber damage... all planes suffer damage when they sortie. It's just one of those things to keep them from being too powerfull. Think of it as somone in the scout unit was issued an AA gun of some type.

Sorry to get back to this way later.

First, no, there were no interception units. The enemy had not teched to AA guns yet as far as I know, and regardless there were none in the area.

Second, I know that all air units take damage when they bombard for balance, even if it isn't logical. I have no problem with that. The thing that surprised me was how much damage--the bomber was taking much less damage when attacking enemy conscripts and riflemen, for example.

I think that it is the "partisans" part of the mod that is creating the scouts. I destroyed several cities this weekend and pretty sure each time the mod had partisans gather in the capitol city, and those were scouts.

Perhaps he is trying to show that these are disgruntled citizens and not trained miliatary units.

Keep in mind just about any weapon can become an anti air weapon. Just because a unit is represented by a scout doesn't actually mean they are running around with a bow and arrow, club or sword of some type. In the late game they are just representing under equiped units and or under trained units.

So the scouts I'm seeing later in the game are either... a moneyless AI player somehow purchasing scouts when scouts are obsolete, OR the partisans? Either would explain why they seem to appear in Civs that are under attack. Can anyone confirm either explanation? I tried search the Communitas wiki for the info about partisans, and could not find it.

I think you're misunderstanding my other point, though: I don't mind the "flavor" of the situation. I am surprised that a 6 combat strength unit is doing significantly more damage than a 28 strength unit. Also, the scout, which did more damage to the bomber, still died after 1 one hit from the bomber. The conscripts, which deal less damage, can survive a number of hits.

Is there some game mechanic at work here that I don't know about? As far as I know, the amount of damage returned to an aerial unit is based on the combat strength of the target (plus any interception damage), like in other combat situations.

I would think if the partisans mod is returning scouts, or the ai is buying them en masse, those too are bugs.

I'm not sure if there is something attached to the scout that makes it defensible over much more advanced units. But there shouldn't be if so.
