As promised ('on or about the 10th') here is the speculation thread.

First up, I will say that in the spirit of the pseudo de-facto term 'classic', this GOTM will require zero download packs for PTW players, and minimum downloads for vanilla Civ3 players. Vanilla civ players will be required to download only the equivlent civs to the PTW civs. People who have played previosu GOTMs will most likely have these already; for those that haven't we will endeavor to put them all together into one handy little download pack. :)

And on to this game:

This game will be 70% ocean on a standard map!

What other speculations do you have?

Lets see, Classic GOTM shortens to CGOTM. Hmmmm, and Conquests GOTM shortens to CGOTM :mischief:.

Difficulty at the gotm was increasing and since cotm1 is at regent I would expect at least demigod, but more likely a deity level game with one of the classic civs we have not used for a while like Greece or Iroquise. Interesting would be a deity game with the Iroquise with similar settings as gotm7 to compare the outcome of these games. At least the mapsize is already standard.
So I expect the same settings as in gotm7.

Its either a tiny pangea or scattered islands, w/ 8 civs. My bet is on an archipelego map, wet, and 4 million years in age. Its going to be a fairly high difficulty level, so we'll probably get a civ slanted toward..... :hmm:

I'll repeat my previous guess: Zulus at Deity.

For the mac players (& those who don't own PTW or C3C), I'm hoping we get to play one of the PTW civs (neosomething or other). :)

I hope King of America is wrong, Zulus on Deity on an 70% ocean map, would be hellish.

How about the British at Emperor? Lots of water for the MOW to wander about in.

Carthage or Bablyon would also be a tribe we haven't had in GOTM for a while.

What would be neat is playing as the Minoans, I think they were militaristic & expanionist, traits not very well suited for this kind of map howeve

My prior speculation was for the English. I guess the Hittites are kind of like an ancient form of the English :) (at least in civ attributes.) The English were due, but maybe not now, after COTM1. And the Iroqouis haven't been played in GOTM since #7; but they were in a Medal Series game. Hmm.

70% Water - I'll still go with the English, and Demigod level. GOTM has historically ramped up in difficulty level, and if maintained as such, the classic game will be at high difficulty level while the conquests game will be at easy/moderate, and vice-versa. Players could then choose to stay at low or high difficulty if they wished, switching between the two contests.

I expect an archipelago map, probably not as the English, but then again there has been a lot of discussion on them in the COTM1 speculation thread. I think to maximize chances that regular GOTM will survive, then difficulty level will be in the Monarch-Emporer realm (pardon the pun), just to maximize participation. A Diety level game would be a big gambit, and one that may pay off, but if participation bombs, then GOTM would take a serious hit. I think it has to be something that will entice those who migrated to COTM to also play GOTM.

Even though we've been seeing a lot of raging barbs lately, I expect to see that same again, because their effects on an archi-map are very different than normal. Also, hot and wet.

I bet a glass of wine that it's the English.

With 70% water, the expansionist trait will be close to useless; the English UU is useless no matter what (I think I never built one). Still, I've always had fun playing them.

I'm sorry to say that the purpose of this thread eludes me. Would someone care to enlighten me?

I mean... really... why not just tell us what it is so we can plan for it instead of playing guessing games?

You're on, Karasu! I'll say it's the Americans, with an equally useless UU. The map will be Pangaea with 70% we'll share in with many other AI and will see whether a BC conquest victory is possible on a standard map. :hammer:

Trying to read between the lines... :scan:
Would vanilla players need downloads to play AS a PTW civ?!
Or simply have some PTW civs played by the AI?
:crazyeye:
A wild speculation - we'll play as Russia on small island with England as a punching ball. AI civs will be together on a laaaarge continent....
...
Oooops, a sense of déjà vu?!

And if there was a vote, I would have voted for playing as England.

If PTW players don't need to install download packs, does that mean the new resources will be gone? Naval movement and the deferred contact and map trading can be done in the game itself, but resources need other files to work properly. I guess I'm just asking what's going to happen to these features now that there's a Conquest game.

I wouldn't think the new resources are gone forever, just think that it's a huge amount of work to prepare multiple scenarios a month, and maybe this month it's just a breather with an easier game to prepare.

NsWAG: Archipeligo, resource constrained, commercial civ for emphasis on a (relatively) peaceful trading game.

Don't assume the reduction in special units and resources is permanent, and I don't think you should assume it was to give Ainwood a breather either. We do listen to all the comments that are made, and this is more likely to be a response to those who prefer fewer downloads and installations.

It's for people who enjoy guessing games. That's not everybody, but some seem to enjoy it, otherwise we wouldn't do it. At some point it will turn into the pre-game discussion, when enough information is available.

Sir Pleb. What was you first 4 builds?

Moderator Action: Please raise this in a spoiler, as I assume it refers to a current or recent game?
