From my experience, France is the best civ for ancient start. This is because 2culture/turn gives turn 5 tradition, which lets france be way ahead in culture, without even trying.

Classical on the otherhand, everyone starts with 55, which mitigates this early tradition bonus.

What do you guys think is the most balanced?

I never started a game at classical...and probably will never do. I just hate starting in another era than ancient. Last game i played with classical start was a multiplayer game in 2006!

Haha. I actually really enjoy all of the various starts. Of course the Future start one that I won with tech victory on turn 17 was just silly ;) I think Rennaissance start is the weirdest.

Different era starts have different strategies. I was getting bored of teh usual LE for ancient start, so I joined a Rennaissance start. I went for liberty and got myself a free GE. Used it to get the Porcelien Tower for a free GS, which I saved for later. Got the university and immediately worked on 2 sci specialist in the same city as the PT was built in. So i had 4 sci specialist (2 from PT and 2 from university). I got an early National Epic+garden+Hagia Sophia for a total of +83% great people generation. With this I was able to get 3 GS in Rennaissance era alone. Including the GS i saved from the PT and the oxford university, I had 5 free tech pop to use! After getting steam power like everyone else, I use all my free techs to skip the industrial era to modern era!

Replaceable parts->Biology->Electricty->Telegraph->Electronics for MECHS!

Upgraded all my rifles to infantries, then the next turn to mechs. My 3 initial cities went on a non-stop production of mechs. Needless to say, I won a domination victory in around 1800's with 18 mechs.

By the way, it's called the infamous mech rush :)

Classical start skips the important decision of the tech order in anc. Not played enought o judge balance.

Played a few ladder medievil start, not a bad era but longs rush almsot always.

" Ren starts ... give some really good options of units/ beelines had some good games

No done ind start

Modern is great again options, prob my fave late start.

Future also fun, tho as you can see the whole map and it's a race to get res hooked
