Coal and Hydro Plants

Ok - I understand that building plants increase factory efficiency and you can build coal plants anywhere, but you can only build hydro plants if you have a river within your city limits.

So, I build coal plants first (since I have coal earlier) and then hydro plants in cities that have rivers when the time comes, replacing the coal plants assumably.

Now, I've gotten ecology and can build solar plants - so I figure I'll build them in the cities that have only coal plants and leave the ones with hydro plants alone.

And, I understand that building a plant (like a hydro plant) will replace the existing plant (like a coal plant) - and if I built a coal plant in a city that has a hydro plant, the coal plant replaces the hydro plant.

Yeah, this is long - bear with me (thanks).

So I'm careful to check each city to see if it has either a coal plant (where I'll build a solar plant) or a hydro plant (where I'll not build any plant) - and I notice that I have several cities with both a coal plant AND a hydro plant in the production box in the lower left-hand corner.

The coal plant has two red thingies next to it and the hydro plant has none.

Does this mean I have both? I'm not sure what this means.

Thanks for your replies.

The two red thingies are to show that the coal plant produces pollution, while a hydro does not.

I don't think you can have both types of plants at the same time, or at least I've never seen it so. My best guess would be that you built Hoover Dam, which puts a hydro plant in all cities (whether they are on fresh water or not), and hand built a coal plant.

No - you cannot have two power plants both producing shields at once.

No - you cannot have two power plants both producing shields at once.

I guess I worded my reply poorly. I have no idea which plant is producing shields (if either one of them), but the red shields indicate that a coal plant does produce pollution. A hydro plant would not have red shields, because it does not produce any pollution.

Very peculiar to have both in the same city.

I may have misread... But if there were two power plants in the same city the most recent one built would be the one active. But if you can controll the pollution by clearing it in the first turn than that isn't a problem.

No, I'm pretty sure those red thingies are signs that it is costing the city two gold per turn for maintenance.

If you built a coal plant in a city and then built the Hoover Dam, then both would show up in the city improvements section (wether the city is next to a river or not.) The benefits of the coal plant are now replaced with the Hoover Dam, so I would sell the coal plant, because it is just costing you 2 gpt in maintenance.

The orange thingie in the bottom left hand corner with the skulls on them are pollution.

The red thingies should be stacks of coins, indicating the maintenance cost of the coal plant. Since the hydro plant doesn't have these, it doesn't cost maintenance and therefore is from the Hoover Dam. I don't think red shields indicate anything other than corruption/waste in that city.

And the hydro plant does not cause any pollution. So there won't be any skulls coming from the hydro plant.

i think that previous power plant is sold the very same turn the next is built. that does not apply to hoover - coal plants will remain and cost some gpt (usual situation in captured AI cities).

yes, and pollute as well. Sell it, I think you get back 40 shields added to the current build project.

That's cool. I didn't know you can get shields for selling an improvement. Every time I sold an improvement, I always had the domestic advisor say "sell for 0 shields and x gold?"

Yes, Lancelot, 40 shields.

You get shields for disbanding units too. If you have old units that can't be upgraded, or you don't want to upgrade them (conscripts and maybe regulars), you can disband them in cities. If a productive city is 5 shields short to finish an expensive project one turn earlier, a little help from one old otherwise useless unit can save one construction turn, for a big city worth a load of shields.

Let me repeat: to get shields from selling city improvements, you must have the modern age tech "recycling." Otherwise you'd just get the gold, but not the shields.

You will always get shields from disbanding units, no tech needed.

building nuclear plants are alot better than hydro or solar plants, though
does hoover dam put it everywhere? like even on the cities without factories?

Yes, I figured that out the hard way.

Every continental city (built before and after the Hoover Dam) will get a brand new hydro plant.

What I didn't do was sell my coal plants after building the HD.

If you have a city on an island or off the continent, you will need to build another power plant (you won't get the free hydro plant).

Yes, but it won't effect the city until you build that factory. If you have Hover, a factory will instantly move the production up 100% instead of just 50%

Lemme guess, you built Hoover Dam. This gives you free Hydros on the continent. Sell off your coals.
