First of all, sorry if i'm posting in the wrong place. I just thought that coins are historicky (well mine are:p) but i guess the thread can stay in the Chamber just as well.

So anyway...

Hi :)

- Are there any coin collectors on CFC ? If so then what do you collect ? What's the oldest coin you have ? What's the most expensive one ? What's the weirdest one ?

- Why are there so few people nowadays with the Hobby of Kings ?

- Even if you are not a collector, do you have any cool / old / precious / awesome / weird coins around the house ?

I try to collect coins from as many places in the world as possible. A nice site called numista draws me a map of places from where i have my coins:

I always wanted to start collecting Roman and Byzantine coins. Some of them are relatively cheap, in the 100-300$ range. It's only a desire on my part so far, though.

I've found byzantine coins much cheaper than that at stores 30-60 dollars ! The prices online are much steeper tho. 30-60 dollars are still outside my price range. :p Most of the coins i buy for my collection cost about 0.20-1 EUR.

I'm pretty sure Dachs studies numismatics (coins). I don't know if he collects them personally though.

I've got some pre-euro european currency somewhere... haven't seen their container since the move though.

Nope! I have a very very very limited quasi-academic grounding in the history of the Greek kingdom of Baktria. Since so much of that is based on coin finds and interpretations of same, I have an extremely basic understanding of numismatics in general and a slightly less basic understanding of the conventions of numismatics as they apply to Baktrian history.

I was going to say Dachs only likes greco-bactrian coins. I was close. :D

Hey, man, the Eukratides stater - you know, the Eukratides stater - is freakin awesome.

Elitist.

I have a few coins from the greco-bactrian kingdoms . Fine artwork, even in the smaller ones. Not up to sicilian/south italian greek engraving standards, but the mix of hellenic and oriental designs and legends makes them very appealing.
Unfortunately the well preserved ones are rather expensive. And things like the stater you mentioned are unobtainable at any price!

What is the most expensive coin you have?
I don't have very expensive coins. My silver victorian sixpence might sell for about 50euro around here. And i have 2 more huge romanian silver coins which i've seen being bought online with 100-150 euro.
That may not seem much, but it's a lot of money around here. :p

My family has saved some old US silver half-dollars, gold dollars, wheat pennies, and some pre-1965 dimes (the composition is different now, the old ones are silver). My grandparents also got me the collector sets of state quarters, but those are considerably more common. My collection of foreign coins is small and mostly leftovers from visiting Europe recently and getting strange Canadian coins in my change. Nothing rare or exciting there, yet.

Only oddball in my collection is a Gibraltar coin from the 60s--if I remember correctly, it looks like this:

I don't know where I got it from.

I have a pretty humble coin collection/paper money collection. My oldest coin is a French 1951 10 Francs. I've handled a 1938 Yugoslav coin, but it wasn't mine and the owner lost it. I wish I could expand my collection but getting old coins is rather hard here. I have a ton of Yugoslav coins so if anyone is up for trading.

That's quite a beautiful rare coin you have there. :)

It may not be with valuable metals but look how low the mintage numbers are:

I'd keep it if only for the awesomness.
