College Bowl Prediction Thread

I don't understand. Do I have to create an account, or do I just use the civfanatics thing?
You have to create an account for ESPN (slight hassle). Read up their "How To Play" then go to the groups page and search for Civfanatics. Redfusion's posted the pw.

My entry is sodar22.

Holiday Bowl: Oklahoma over Oregon

I just moved to Eugene and the Ducks are so torqued that they aren't in the Fiesta Bowl, I just don't see them getting over it enough to prepare for Oklahoma.

Oregon is a better team, but water doesn't roll off of these Ducks backs.

A.K.A. Cal from last year

a quick question: so many bowl games. Is the number constant from year to year? Also, is there an order in which the Bowl managers decide who they are picking for their game?

I think it's up 2 from last year

Most bowls have an " agreement " with 2 conferences to take a certain placed team from that conference, excluding the BCS ones

You have to have a winning record (or be 6-6 or better in years with 12 games) to get invited to a bowl. That's the only limit on how many bowls there can be, so they keep coming up with new ones.

But most of the ones before Christmas can be safely ignored (sorry Fetus!)

Southern Miss got the win as expected last night. Is anyone else sick of this USC love fest that ESPN has been giving these past couple weeks. I mean they haven't even beaten Texas and yet they are comparing them to the greatest teams of all time. It's starting to feel like Miami-tOSU all over again. I can't wait for Texas to win that game (though I'll be so annoyed if they start talking about a shocking upset!).

I still want them to both lose somehow. I giant rock could fall from the sky or something.

I for one am sick of USC, and am furiously pulling for Texas ;) .

The 2005 Trojans aren't even the best team this decade. I'd say in the past 6 years the 2001 Hurricanes and even last years Trojans were better. I've been following ESPNs coverage of USC vs the "best teams of all time". Herbstreit and Mark May totally dismiss the notion that any defense EVER can stop the USC offense. Being an Ohio State fan, I'd say this years Trojans could possibly beat the 2002 Buckeyes but to say that Ohio State defense could not hold USC under 30 points is ridiculous. Miami had a high powered offense and a MUCH BETTER defense going into that game and put up 24 points after two overtimes of forced scoring. And as expected the polls are highly in favor of USC. The majority of people probably visiting ESPN.com haven't been following sports for more than three-four years, they probably fall into a 15-25 age category. These people will put USC over an Oklahoma team of the 50s or a Nebraska team of the 90s simply because they know nothing of the total and utter dominance of these teams.

. . . or in the Pac 10!

The '91 Huskies had one of the best defenses in the nation and the best I can think of in the Pac 10. Their Offense featured NFL caliber players on the Line, at Reciever, Tight End, Running Back and Quarterback. In fact 28 players on that team spent time in the NFL, and 5 were drafted in the first round. Steve Entman was a god (although injury killed his NFL career). I remember watching them dominate teams in the first half and watching their second stringers hold their own in the second.

I've never seen the media fall in love with a team like USC, not even the great Miami teams.

For the nostalgic, here's an article I dug up.

I'm sick of both of them. Texas hasn't played a real team in the last year accept for OSU and the '04 Wolverines. Remember that-
  • They beat Big Blue in the last second
  • Ohio State gave the game away
  • They havn't played a real friggin team this year
As much as I hate both of them, Texas is not a real team. I think USC wins by 10.

I was surprised that Arkansas State kept it close for as long as they did last night.

As for USC/Texas, I'll reserve my judgment until after the game is played. The reason I'm not sick of USC? I don't watch ESPN.

As for best team of all time, or this decade, or in the Pac-10: I'm going to wait until they figure out a legitimate way to find the best team of any individual year before I start worrying about that . . .

You were probably surprised because you've probably never seen Arkansas State play before (I know I hadn't).

Not really surprised Toledo hammered UTEP. I don't know why I didn't pick the MAC team, I always do otherwise.

That plus the fact that I had seen Southern Miss play and I knew Arkansas State was from I-AA. Er, I mean the Sunbelt . . .

That one was a total guess for me; I knew very little about either team. Ultimately, I just couldn't side with Mike Price . . .

Tonights your night isn't it Fetus?
Sadly, Fetus is indisposed and will miss his Golden Bears crushing the Cougars . . .

EDIT: 2-0! I'm worried about Navy though . . .

And Southern Miss has produced one of the greatest NFL qbs of all time in Brett Favre. They have a surprisingly large number of players in the NFL considering they are a midmajor team.

The only midmajors that get respect/deserve respect is the MAC, CUSA and Mountain West although the WAC has had a couple of good years with Boise State.
