I intend to sumbit this letter to the editor of my college paper tomorrow ... since there's so many college students posting here, I thought I'd get the sense of the posters on this topic ...
Dear Editor,
I am writing regarding the advertising content in the March 29th edition of the Carolinian. Two advertisements in particular struck me as being potentially inappropriate for our campus newspaper.
Page 14 features a solicitation from The Donor Egg Registry of Greenville and Charlotte for young women to donate (for a $3,000 fee) eggs to infertile couples. This procedure involves a months worth of daily injections of hormones and drugs, followed by a surgical procedure to harvest a chemically induced bounty of eggs from the donor.
Less frightening to the squeamish among us but perhaps even more cynical is the ad on page 16 for the Game Time / Riptide sports bar and nightclub in Greenville. Their Wednesday College Night promotion includes, among other things, a Wet T-Shirt Contest with a $300 cash prize.
I find it disturbing that the papers access to the eyes and attention spans of students is being peddled to advertisers interested in exploiting the female student body or should I say students bodies? for profit. While other publications targeted to a similar demographic (free alternative weeklies, for example) might accept this type of advertising, I would propose that the Carolinian, being student-run, has a different responsibility to the campus community it serves.
Most media outlets have a stated policy regarding the types of advertising they will and will not accept, and Im sure the Carolinian is no exception. Perhaps it is time for those standards to be re-evaluated.
